About The Role

Kent is looking for an experienced Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) Planner with an Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) and Telecommunications background to support the ITA2 Construction Project at the Kearl Project in Fort McKay, Alberta. The AWP Planner will work closely with Construction, Project Controls, Engineering, Supply Chain, Materials Management, and field leadership to support the development, coordination, and execution of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP), with a primary focus on E&I and Telecommunications scopes. The successful candidate will help ensure construction work is properly planned, sequenced, and constraint-free to enable safe, efficient, and productive field execution. This role requires a strong understanding of AWP, Workface Planning (WFP), E&I and Telecommunications construction activities, and construction planning within a large industrial project environment. The successful candidate must be able to coordinate effectively across multiple disciplines and stakeholders in a fast-paced site environment and translate project requirements into practical, executable work packages for field construction teams.

Responsibilities

Support and help execute the project's AWP strategy and processes, with a primary focus on E&I and Telecommunications construction scopes.
Develop, maintain, and coordinate Construction Work Packages (CWPs) and Installation Work Packages (IWPs) aligned with the project schedule, Path of Construction, and construction sequence.
Review E&I/Telecom engineering deliverables, drawings, specifications, and material and equipment information to confirm work packages are ready for release.
Identify, track, and help resolve constraints — engineering, materials, permits, access, predecessor work — that could delay work package release or execution.
Coordinate with Construction, Engineering, Project Controls, Supply Chain, and Materials Management to align work package priorities, sequencing, and required-on-site dates.
Support Path of Construction planning and coordinate the development, review, and release of IWPs for look-ahead and field execution.
Maintain visibility of work package status, readiness, and constraints, and provide regular updates to project and construction leadership.
Support short- and medium-term construction planning, including look-ahead schedules and Workface Planning activities.
Facilitate and participate in AWP, IWP, and construction coordination meetings, and incorporate field feedback and lessons learned into future work packages.
Support turnover and completion planning, ensuring work packages align with systems, testing requirements, and the overall project turnover strategy.
Maintain accurate AWP/IWP/CWP documentation, constraint logs, and status records, and support continuous improvement of AWP and Workface Planning processes.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience

Knowledge/ Qualification/ Training/ Certification

Diploma or degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
7+ years of industrial construction, planning, or Workface Planning experience, preferably in oil sands, oil and gas, petrochemical, mining, or heavy industrial projects.
Demonstrated background in Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) and/or Telecommunications construction, including developing or coordinating E&I/Telecom CWPs and IWPs.
Strong working knowledge of AWP concepts (EWPs, CWPs, IWPs, Path of Construction, constraint management) and Workface Planning.
Ability to read and interpret electrical/instrumentation drawings, cable schedules, equipment layouts, and related technical documentation.
Experience coordinating interdisciplinary construction activities and understanding dependencies with civil, structural, mechanical, and piping disciplines.
Experience on brownfield projects, within operating facilities, or in the Alberta oil sands is an asset.
Working knowledge of project controls, scheduling, progress measurement, and construction productivity principles.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and familiarity with construction planning, scheduling, and AWP software/tools.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple work packages and deadlines in a dynamic construction environment.
Willingness and ability to work the assigned 14/7 site rotation, with valid or obtainable site safety training and certifications.

Communication

Excellent command of English, written and verbal.
Strong interpersonal and coordination skills across field supervision, trades, Engineering, Project Controls, Supply Chain, and client representatives.
Ability to clearly communicate work priorities, constraints, and schedule impacts, and translate technical information into practical guidance for field teams.
Comfortable facilitating AWP, IWP, and multidisciplinary coordination meetings, and building productive working relationships across the project team.
