Job Summary

The Ireland Roads Team is seeking a Principal Engineer with extensive post professional qualification experience in the design and project management of road schemes and active travel schemes to work in our Dublin office. The team is growing and offers excellent opportunities for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will lead and help grow a team undertaking preliminary and detailed designs for major national Road/Transport schemes including the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Project, Public Transport schemes including Metrolink, Cork Bus Connects and Active Travel schemes for the National Transport Authority and Local Authorities.

The right candidate shall be able to take on significant elements of design working on their own initiative with some support from the senior specialist in the relevant field. The successful candidate shall be able to obtain and analyse information, report on findings through effective communication of project proposals, assessments and intended outcomes.

Core Functions

  • Managing projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi-disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
  • Liaising with our clients, developing strong trusted relationships, proactively managing their expectations and comprehensively advising them.
  • Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
  • Using your technical ability and experience to develop our staff.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities, supporting the preparation of tender packages.
  • Responsible for compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and inhouse quality assurance standards/processes.
  • Maintaining a design risk register and participating in risk workshops as required.
  • Manage all external interfaces - i.e. Local Authorities, Government agencies, property owners.
  • Management and co-ordination of relevant external third party contracts where appropriate; Work as part of an integrated team to deliver high quality engineering services for our clients.
  • Provide technical input to our cross sector multidisciplinary internal project teams supporting the delivery of transportation, commercial/residential development and environmental infrastructure projects.

Qualifications and Work Experience

The successful candidate will be degree qualified in civil engineering or another appropriate subject and be a member of an appropriate professional institution. It is anticipated that you will be a Chartered Civil Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer with extensive (i.e. > 5 years) post professional qualification experience.

The successful candidate will be capable of working to tight project deadlines, work comfortably under pressure and have an open and honest approach. Evidence of good communication and team working skills will be sought.

Required and desired qualifications, experience and knowledge also include

  • Project management and technical delivery lead of Road or Public Transport/Active Travel schemes, with experience of Transport Infrastructure Ireland/National Transport Authority/Local Authority procedures essential.
  • A thorough understanding and application of current design standards including; Urban Street and/or Active Travel Design (i.e. Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets - DMURS, Traffic Signs Manual, Cycle Design Manual etc.), Highway Geometric Design (i.e. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Publications) and also TII and NTA Project Management Guidelines.
  • Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts/NEC Contracts.
  • Stakeholder Management.
  • Experience or knowledge of alignment and drainage design software packages such as Civil3D/Open Roads/MX and WinDes preferred, but not essential.
  • Good communication, client management and interpersonal skills are essential.
