What we need you to do
The General Maintenance Volunteer supports Action for Children by helping to maintain safe, clean and welcoming indoor and outdoor environments. The role contributes to creating positive spaces where children, young people, families, staff and volunteers can feel comfortable and supported.
- Carry out light gardening and grounds maintenance, including weeding, watering plants, trimming hedges, sweeping pathways and maintaining outdoor areas.
- Support the upkeep and tidiness of gardens, play areas, courtyards and other external spaces.
- Undertake basic painting and decorating tasks to help maintain buildings and facilities.
- Assist with general indoor and outdoor cleaning and tidying of communal areas, storage spaces and meeting rooms.
- Help with simple maintenance tasks such as assembling furniture, changing notice boards, hanging pictures or replacing basic fixtures where appropriate.
- Support the movement of light furniture and equipment for events, activities and room set-ups.
- When on site - Carry out regular visual checks of facilities and report any repairs, hazards or health and safety concerns to designated staff members.
- Follow all Action for Children policies, procedures and health and safety requirements.
What Skills and experience do you need?
- Practical, hands-on approach to tasks.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Basic DIY, gardening or maintenance skills.
- Good awareness of health and safety practices.
- Positive attitude and willingness to support the organisation.

- Be friendly and have a good sense of humour
