About The Role

The role

We are currently lo oking for Communications Officer based in Vientiane Capital.

Role Purpose

Save the Children in Laos with the support from UNICEF and in close coordination with the Ministry of Health (MoH) Lao PDR, is implementing a multi-year Wasting Prevention and Treatment Programme to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes, particularly among vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations across different 11 high-burden provinces. The programme focuses on strengthening community and facility-based nutrition services, improving maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) practices, expanding access to quality preventive and curative services, and reinforcing health system leadership, coordination, and accountability mechanisms.

Save the Children International (SCI), as an implementing partner of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), works in close collaboration with national, provincial, and district health authorities to strengthen the capacity of health workers and Village Health Volunteers (VHVs), improve service delivery platforms (including Integrated Management of acute Malnutrition(IMAM), Growth Monitoring and Promotion( GMP), outreach services), and promote evidence-based, community-driven nutrition practices for six provinces in Lao PDR. The programme also supports strengthening DHIS2-based data systems and piloting innovative, food-based approaches for managing malnutrition.

The Communications Officer will support the implementation of advocacy, communication, visibility, documentation, knowledge management, and stakeholder engagement activities for the UNICEF-funded Wasting Prevention and Treatment Programme. The position will help ensure that programme achievements, lessons learned, and community-level impact are effectively documented and communicated to government partners, UNICEF, communities, and other stakeholders.

The role will work directly with Senior Communications Coordinator and Head of Advocacy, Campaigns, Communication and Media from Program Development and Quality (PDQ) Department, and in close coordination with programme, technical, MEAL, supply chain, and operations teams to translate nutrition and health-related information into accessible and engaging communication contents and products while ensuring compliance with UNICEF visibility requirements and Save the Children communication standards.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder may be requested to provide communications and visibility support beyond their regular responsibilities and, where necessary, work flexible hours to meet programme and organizational needs.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Ensure they fully understand the provisions of the Child Safeguarding Policy, the Code of Conduct and Local/Country Procedures.
  • Conduct themselves in accordance with the rules of the Child Safeguarding Policy, in their personal and professional lives – which includes reporting suspicions of child abuse.

Key responsibilities

Communication and Visibility Support

  • Support the development and implementation of project communication plan and visibility activities for the Nutrition Programme to promote program achievements, lessons learned, and impact among donors, government stakeholders, partners and communities.
  • Ensure communication materials comply with UNICEF and Save the Children branding and visibility standard.
  • Support preparation of visibility materials for workshops, meetings, campaigns, and field activities.
  • Support the preparation and rollout of communications and visibility campaigns.

Documentation and Content Development

  • Collect information, photographs, interviews, and success stories from programme implementation areas.
  • Support and take initiative in the development of contents and products, including success stories, newsletters, case studies, factsheets, briefing materials, event summaries, and presentations.
  • Support the development of communication materials that translate technical nutrition information into simple and accessible messages.
  • Maintain an organized archive of communication materials, photos, videos, and publications to SCI’s sharepoint and Contenthub.

Digital Communication and Media Support

  • Prepare content for social media, websites, and other digital platforms.
  • Support media coverage and documentation of programme activities and events.
  • Support and take initiative in producing communication materials such as graphics, photos, and short videos.

Coordination and Reporting Support

  • Work closely with communications, programme, MEAL, supply chain, and technical teams to gather accurate information and support communications tasks.
  • Support communication inputs for donor reports, presentations, and programme updates when required.
  • Assist in organizing, photographing, and videographing the workshops, field visits, learning events, and stakeholder meetings when required.
  • Support dissemination of programme achievements, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Support the planning and organization of events, workshops, exhibitions, project showcases, donor visits, and field visits, ensuring appropriate branding, documentation, media coverage, and stakeholder engagement.

Other Assigned Duties

  • Participate in other Save the Children or project activities when assigned.
  • Significant travel to project sites may be required.
  • Out-of-hours work (including evenings, weekends and public holidays) may occasionally be required during peak communication periods or major events.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Development studies or relevant field.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in communications, media, public relations, content development, or visibility support within NGOs, development programmes, humanitarian organizations, or donor-funded projects.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communication and visibility materials, including success stories, newsletters, case studies, presentations, reports, social media content, and event summaries.
  • Proven ability to collect and document programme information through interviews, photography, videography, field visits, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience translating technical or programmatic information into clear, engaging, and audience-friendly communication products.
  • Strong creativity, writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to produce high-quality content for both digital and print platforms.
  • Experience supporting communication and visibility requirements of donor-funded programmes and ensuring compliance with donor branding and visibility guidelines.
  • Proficiency in photography, basic video production and graphic design for multi-media communication and advocacy purposes.
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with programme, technical, MEAL, supply chain, government, and partner stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ethical communication practices, including informed consent, safeguarding principles, data protection, and respectful representation of children and vulnerable communities.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Lao.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, social media management tools, and graphic design applications such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake frequent travel to project implementation areas and support activities outside regular working hours when required.

Desirable

  • Experience working on nutrition, health, child rights, education, or community development programmes.
  • Experience working in and supporting NGOs, INGOs, UN agencies projects are preferrable
  • Skills in video editing, photography editing, and multimedia content production.
  • Experience coordinating media visits, press coverage and public awareness campaigns.

Contract length: Fixed term (1 year with the possibility of extension)
