We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Diesel Fitter to join our workshop team in Townsville , supporting customers across the General Construction sector in civil, infrastructure, and building projects throughout North Queensland. In the hand-on position, you will be responsible for providing high-quality maintenance, diagnostics, and repair services on a range of Caterpillar and allied equipment.

This is a permanent position working a Monday to Friday roster.

What you’ll be doing

As a Diesel Fitter at Hastings Deering, you will

  • Deliver reliable workshop repairs – conduct diagnostics, repairs, component replacements, and maintenance on construction equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve faults – identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues and carry out effective corrective actions to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Stay ahead with preventative care – perform scheduled servicing, inspections, and preventative maintenance activities to maximise equipment lifespan and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain high workshop standards – complete all work to manufacturer specifications and company quality standards, ensuring equipment is returned to service in peak condition.
  • Keep documentation precise – accurately complete service reports, repair records, warranty documentation, and safety paperwork in line with company requirements.
  • Prioritise safety every time – maintain a strong commitment to safety, following all workshop procedures, policies, and housekeeping standards to create a safe working environment.
  • Strengthen customer relationships – collaborate effectively with fellow technicians, supervisors, and parts personnel to deliver exceptional maintenance outcomes and customer satisfaction.

What you’ll need

A successful teammate will have experience in

  • Bring the right qualifications – hold a recognised trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter or equivalent to perform high‑quality mechanical work.
  • Build on practical industry experience – demonstrate hands‑on experience working with construction and earthmoving equipment across a range of applications.
  • Diagnose with confidence – apply strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills to quickly identify faults and deliver effective solutions.
  • Work independently in the field – operate autonomously in a field‑based environment, managing tasks and time efficiently.
  • Communicate with professionalism – provide excellent communication and customer service to support strong client relationships.
  • Drive safely and responsibly – hold a current driver’s licence (HR licence desirable) to meet operational requirements.
  • Commit to safety and quality – maintain a strong focus on safe work practices and deliver workmanship that meets the highest standards.
