Scope of Position

The Material Handler is responsible for safely receiving, unloading, storing, handling, and preparing steel, tubing, and other raw materials to support manufacturing operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining efficient material flow, inventory accuracy, and timely delivery of materials to production areas while supporting a safe and organized work environment.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This position reports to the Vice President of Operations. This role is onsite and is based in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, unload, and stock incoming steel, tubing, raw materials, and other freight shipments.
  • Safely operate forklifts, overhead hoists, and other material handling equipment to move, store, and stage materials.
  • Verify incoming materials against purchase orders, packing slips, and receiving documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete all required paperwork related to receiving, inventory transactions, and material movement.
  • Organize and maintain raw material inventory to support efficient production operations.
  • Assist in the preparation, staging, and delivery of materials required for manufacturing activities.
  • Supply materials to production departments according to established schedules and production requirements.
  • Perform material handling activities within established productivity and standard time expectations.
  • Assist with inventory counts, cycle counts, and inventory control activities.
  • Inspect forklifts, hoists, and other equipment before use and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Follow all environmental, health, and safety requirements and actively support the Company's safety culture.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Watts' values of integrity, accountability, continuous improvement and innovation, and transparency.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects and duties as assigned by the Vice President of Operations or Company management.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience operating forklifts or similar material handling equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate overhead hoists and lifting equipment.
  • Basic mathematical skills and the ability to perform quantity verification and inventory-related calculations.
  • Ability to read and accurately use a tape measure.
  • Ability to read and understand work instructions, shipping documents, labels, and inventory records.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned work within established expectations.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Understanding of and adherence to applicable laws, codes, policies, regulations, and safety practices and procedures, as applicable.
  • Must successfully establish employment eligibility and satisfactorily complete background checks, including drug screening, and required pre-employment testing as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience handling steel, tubing, sheet metal, or other industrial raw materials.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, fabrication, warehouse, or industrial environment.
  • Experience operating cranes, rigging equipment, or industrial lifting devices.
  • Experience with inventory management systems, warehouse systems, or ERP software.
  • Knowledge of receiving, inventory control, and material storage best practices.

Working Conditions

While performing the job duties, the employee will work on-site at the Company's Hutchinson, Kansas manufacturing facility. Responsibilities require regular exposure to raw materials, forklifts, overhead hoists, moving equipment, production operations, outdoor environments, and varying weather conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times as required by company policy and safety regulations.

Physical Requirements : Specific physical abilities required for this position include, but are not limited to

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work outdoors for up to 10 hours per day in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, reach, and climb as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull, and manipulate controls, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, overhead hoists, and other material handling equipment.
  • Ability to read labels, shipping documents, inventory records, and measuring devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work safely around moving machinery, vehicles, and lifting operations.
  • Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance.
