About The Role
MPF Federal is seeking a qualified Physician – Internal Medicine to provide outpatient internal medicine services at WHASC, JBSA-Lackland. Services will be performed onsite at the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).
The Internal Medicine Physician will deliver comprehensive, evidence-based primary and internal medicine care to adult patients while supporting readiness, access to care, quality improvement, and clinical training initiatives in accordance with MTF policies and privileging requirements.
Work Schedule & Hours
- Hours of Performance (MTF Operations): Monday through Friday, 0545–1800
- Shift Options: 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour shifts (Monday–Friday)
Core Responsibilities
The Internal Medicine Physician will provide services within the scope of practice and clinical privileges granted by the MTF, including but not limited to:
Adult Primary Care & Internal Medicine Services
- Provide internal medicine care for adult patients ages 18 and older with acute and chronic conditions
- Examine, diagnose, treat, and prescribe appropriate courses of treatment within scope of training, experience, and privileges
- Provide preventive care and health maintenance, including annual physicals, counseling, and patient education to support positive health behaviors and self-care skills
- Manage comprehensive patient care including post-discharge follow-up, urgent/acute needs, chronic disease management, and medication management
Diagnostics, Referrals, and Care Coordination
- Order diagnostic tests and interpret results as appropriate
- Approve/disapprove subspecialty referrals and request consultations or referrals to appropriate specialists/clinics/resources as indicated
- Provide telephone consult support with assistance of clinic staff
- Refill prescriptions and manage ongoing treatment plans and preventive care needs
Access to Care & Panel Management (If Assigned)
May serve as a Primary Care Manager (PCM) for an empanelment
Meet access standards of at minimum
- 50 bookable face-to-face and 15 telemedicine appointments per week; or
- If telemedicine is not available, 63 bookable face-to-face appointments per week
- Panel and booking standards may be adjusted based on Graduate Medical Education (GME) requirements when applicable
Emergency Response & Clinical Readiness
- Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergency problems as they occur
- Maintain readiness to respond to emergent clinical situations consistent with facility protocols
Teaching, Training, and Professional Support
- Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other healthcare professionals within granted privileges
- Provide educational lectures and participate in in-service training to clinic staff members
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in directing and teaching other medical staff in accordance with Government and professional clinical standards and accepted protocols
Clinical Scope of Conditions Managed
The physician must have sufficient experience to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries including, but not limited to
- Cardiovascular conditions
- Respiratory diseases
- Gastrointestinal diseases
- Endocrinological diseases
- Rheumatological diseases
- Renal diseases
- Infectious diseases
- Neurological disorders
Procedures (If Assigned to Inpatient Services)
If working inpatient services, the physician must have sufficient experience to perform procedures including, but not limited to:
ECG interpretation
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Graded exercise treadmill testing
Central line placement
Arterial line placement
Intubation and airway management
Hemodynamic invasive monitoring
Lumbar puncture
Paracentesis
Thoracentesis
CPR
Quality, Compliance, and Performance Improvement
- Participate in the clinic Quality Assurance Program and performance improvement activities as required to meet Joint Commission standards and MTF requirements
- Maintain compliance with MTF policies, procedures, bylaws, and professional conduct standards
- Support ongoing review of clinical competence as part of initial and recurring privileging processes

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
Graduate of an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada (or foreign equivalent meeting U.S. equivalency requirements such as ECFMG certification, Fifth Pathway, or USMLE completion as applicable)
Internship/Residency
- Successful completion of an internship and Internal Medicine residency approved by ACGME or the AOA (or recognized U.S./Canada accrediting equivalent)
- At least one (1) year of supervised clinical experience providing direct patient care (internship or first year of residency)
Experience
- Must meet service-specific credentialing clinical competency requirements
- Must include at least 32 hours of patient treatment within Internal Medicine in the last 24 months
Board Certification
Board Certified in Internal Medicine or eligible to test for Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
Licensure/Privileging
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice medicine as required in the Task Order
- Must meet privileging requirements per the most current version of AFI 44-119, Medical Quality Operations
- Must furnish the MTF Credentialing Office copies of valid licenses, registrations, education/training, and certifications as required
Certifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
Screening Requirements
Privileging applications may require screening through NPDB/HIPDB and applicable exclusion/sanction lists (e.g., DHHS OIG exclusions and TRICARE sanction listing) prior to clinical practice
