Position Summary

The goal of WWTP Operator in Training (OIT) is to prepare individuals for a career as operators in the Water/Wastewater Industry. The OIT will assist individuals with becoming well trained, certified Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment Plan Operators who are qualified to perform their duties in a professional, safe, and permit compliant manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Participates in the operations and maintenance of water/wastewater treatment equipment according to applicable rules and regulations; collects various water/wastewater samples; keeps accurate records and logs on all lift station activities.

Reports any failures or operating difficulties to appropriate staff.

Assists in the operation, monitoring and maintenance of lift stations throughout the Pueblo of Sandia; performs preventive maintenance on all lift station equipment.

Adjusts and maintains all water/wastewater treatment plant processing equipment; investigates equipment failure, determines cause and takes necessary action.

Maintains and operates various vehicles land equipment including dump truck and landscaping tools; performs a variety of landscaping work as needed.

Interprets and acts on information taken from SCADA, gauges, meters, charts, and other instruments.

Operates computers, generators, automatic sampling system and associated treatment equipment.

Assists Operator I, II and Lead on projects.

Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Performs general housekeeping duties such as sweeping, cleaning, hosing down tanks, walkways, rooms and cleaning tanks and other equipment.

Demonstrate flexibility with work schedule. Work hours are subject to change; callouts and overtime must be authorized by supervisor. Must be able to work long hours if required.

Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility for all team members and are expected to report to work based upon the assigned schedule each day in accordance with the Attendance Policy for Pueblo of Sandia.

Strong interpersonal skills with all direct work associates as well as networking with all Team Members is essential throughout Pueblo of Sandia whether they hold public facing and/or back-of-the-house positions.

Key Performance Indicators

This position has Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) identified as a measurement of success. KPI’s will be shared to all team members who work in this job title and feedback will be provided regarding the successful completion of the KPI’s as part of the performance review process.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of pumps, valves, electric motors, diesel engines and electronic, computerized and manual control systems.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles and calculations, including metrics.
  • Knowledge of basic functions and servicing requirements of equipment used in water treatment facilities.
  • Ability to learn principles and procedures of water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Ability to learn to collect a variety of samples and conduct appropriate tests.
  • Ability to learn to operate, monitor and maintain lift stations.
  • Ability to assist in the maintenance of equipment involved in the operation of water/wastewater treatment plant.
  • Ability to learn how to operate a variety of pumps, treatment and process control equipment and machinery, including digital control equipment.
  • Ability to accurately read meters, gauges, valve books, blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to operate pump truck, water truck, skid steer, and backhoe.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a computer and standard business software.
  • Ability to learn and follow safety policies, procedures and safe work practices applicable to Utilities, Public Works Department and the Pueblo of Sandia.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Required

  • High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Note: Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy education and/or work experience.

License/Certifications/Registrations

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain a New Mexico Water and Wastewater I Certificate within 1 year and 6 months of employment.

Must successfully complete and maintain the following courses/training

  • CPR: within 30 days, renewal every 2 years.
  • First Aide: within 30 days, renewal every 2 years.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background investigation.
  • Will require a pre-employment and random drug screening.
