High School ELA Teacher

Start Date: February 2026

The Role

We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and inspiring High School ELA Teacher to join the English Department. The successful candidate will teach English Language Arts to students in Grades 9 - 12, helping them develop advanced literacy skills, sophisticated analytical thinking, and strong academic writing. The role requires someone who can support learners as they engage with complex texts, prepare for university-level expectations, and build confidence in both literary interpretation and effective communication.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Teach high-quality High School ELA classes across Grades 9 - 12.
  • Deliver engaging lessons that strengthen skills in literary analysis, academic writing, research methods, rhetoric, and critical reading.
  • Use a variety of instructional approaches that support diverse learning needs.
  • Encourage students to engage with classic and contemporary literature and to respond thoughtfully in both written and oral formats.
  • Use technology and modern resources to enhance instruction.

Curriculum Development

  • Contribute to the design and refinement of High School English curricula, ensuring alignment with international standards.
  • Develop units that connect literature to broader historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary themes.
  • Support students preparing for AP English courses, internal assessments, and university-level expectations.

Student Assessment and Support

  • Assess student progress through essays, research assignments, projects, presentations, and tests.
  • Provide detailed, constructive feedback to help students develop as thinkers and writers.
  • Identify students who require extra support or further academic challenge and offer appropriate guidance.

Co-Curricular Activities

  • Contribute to ELA-related activities such as debate, journalism, creative writing, drama, or literary societies.
  • Support school events promoting reading, writing, performance, and public speaking.

Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with English and Humanities colleagues on curriculum planning, shared assessments, and cross-disciplinary initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional learning, and whole-school activities.

Classroom Environment

  • Maintain a positive, organised, and intellectually stimulating classroom.
  • Encourage respectful discussion, active participation, and independent thought.
  • Ensure learning materials and resources are used effectively and responsibly.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in English, Literature, Education, or a related field.
  • A recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE, QTS, state certification, or national license (not TEFL/TESOL).
  • Experience teaching ELA at High School level.
  • Strong subject expertise and a passion for literature, writing, and academic inquiry.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience teaching in an international school.
  • Familiarity with inquiry-led, concept-based, or student-centred approaches.
  • A proven ability to prepare students for external assessments and university admissions.

Remuneration and Benefits
