About The Role
Describe the Job
The Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) is seeking an undergraduate or law student to join the Pro Bono Team, where they will work with our expungement division. They will help low-income Michiganders get a clean slate, opening opportunities for work, stable housing, higher education, and public benefits.
Educational Values of the Position
The student will be supervised by MAP’s Expungement Project Attorney, and will be based out of MAP’s Ypsilanti office. This position can be tailored to areas of interest within the realm of criminal record expungement. Possible responsibilities include drafting briefs, drafting and filing applications to set aside convictions, contacting clients and conveying attorney-approved legal advice, drafting eligibility letters, and interfacing with courts and police departments to resolve record issues. For 2L and 3L students there will also be opportunities to represent clients in a hearing supervised by an attorney if desired.
Students wil gain hands on experience in public interest work, including implementation of various lawyering tasks and procedures, as well as improved communication skills by interacting with courts and multiple other departments.
Requirements for the job
Applicants must possess strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience. Familiarity with the criminal legal system and/or experience working with people impacted by the criminal legal system is welcome but not required. Experience with legal writing is a plus.
