As the Director, Legal Counsel - Employment you will provide practical, business-focused legal advice and guidance to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders on a wide range of employment matters in Canada and the U.S.

This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Head of Litigation. The position is based out of Ontario, Canada and is currently remote.

What you’ll be doing

Provide legal advice on employment matters, including hiring, performance management, discipline, terminations, restructurings, and compliance with Canadian and U.S. employment laws and regulations

Partner with senior leadership on executive employment matters, including executive compensation and employment-related issues

Manage employment-related disputes and claims, including overseeing external counsel and coordinating strategy, risk assessment, and resolution

Lead or oversee workplace investigations; review investigative plans and reports to ensure thoroughness, completeness, and defensibility

Draft and review employment documentation and related materials (e.g., employment agreements, separation agreements, policies, templates)

Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations; provide updates and recommend improvements to company policies and practices

Prepare responses to regulatory, audit, and third-party requests, including document production and related submissions

Research and prepare legal briefs and memoranda on employment law issues

Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations and advise on updates to company policies and practices

Collaborate with Human Resources to develop and implement policies, processes, and provide guidance on employment matters

Work closely with the broader Legal team and cross-functional partners to support business objectives

Manage the Company’s Conflict of Interest policy and Code of Business Conduct and Ethics

Deliver annual training on the Code for all employees

Provide advice and guidance on compliance with employee privacy laws and related issues

You’ll need to have

LLB/JD and admitted to the Bar of Ontario (or significant experience with Ontario employment laws and procedures)

At least 5 years of in-house or law firm experience (in-house experience in a mixed manufacturing, agricultural, and professional environment is a plus)

Subject matter expertise in Canadian and U.S. employment and labor law

Working knowledge of Canadian and E.U. privacy laws is a plus

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing and communication skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision

Willingness to travel moderately, as needed

Perform multiple tasks, work on short lead times and meet tight deadlines

Salary range: $180,000 - $200,000 (Ontario*) per year

The actual compensation offered will be based on factors such as the candidate’s experience, skills, qualifications, geographic location, applicable market data, internal equity, and business needs, and may vary within the stated range. This role may be eligible for bonus, incentive compensation, or other variable pay in accordance with applicable company plans.
