Basic Purpose
Positions in this job f amily are assigned responsibilities related to maintaining the security, control and custody o f inmates in a state adult correctional f acility .
Typical F unctions
- Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety o f situations and activities; maintain security o f an assigned area or post.
- Provides security and supervision over inmate work crews; escorts inmates to work sites; inventories and controls all equipment, weapons, tools and keys.
- Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shi f t; observes activities and movements o f inmates; manages inmate conduct, work and discipline.
- Maintains order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspects living areas, f acilities and work locations f or unauthorized objects or materials; makes reports on incidents.
- Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipment maintaining controlled movement o f inmates, sta f f and the public.
- Conducts inmate counts; per f orms searches o f inmates and living quarters f or contraband; en f orces institutional rules and regulations.
- Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement.
- Participates on escape and apprehension teams; responds to riots and f ires.
Level Descriptor
This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities as a correctional security sergeant to include such duties as serving as a team leader or a lead worker and may also be responsible f or providing training, assigning work and other related duties. Employees assigned to this level that are working within an institution may be charged with independently per f orming a specialized f unction requiring a high degree o f judgment and skill such as an inmate public work crew o f f icer, gun gang o f f icer, K-9 unit o f f icer, transportation o f f icer, restricted housing unit o f f icer, key and tool o f f icer, control room o f f icer, visiting room o f f icer, gate o f f icer, activities o f f icer, hospital security posts or armory o f f icer.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge o f the f undamentals o f English usage; o f basic math; o f reporting writing; o f the use and care o f f irearms; o f proper restraint methods and techniques; o f sel f -de f ense methods; o f the methods and objectives o f discipline required f or inmates under restraint; and o f the psychology o f inmate behavior. Ability is required to evaluate situations and adopt e f f ective courses o f action; to exercise alertness and be able to act quickly and e f f ectively in an emergency situation; to f ollow oral and written instructions; to gather and organize f acts and complete clear, concise reports; to communicate e f f ectively; to establish and maintain e f f ective working relationships; to maintain pro f iciency with f irearms; and to assess and manage con f licts within the inmate population.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist o f the statutory requirements contained in Title 57 O.S., Section 510.A.2: “a. The minimum age f or service shall be twenty (20) years o f age. The Director shall have the authority to establish the maximum age f or correctional o f f icers entering service and b. possession o f thirty (30) semester hours f rom an accredited college or university; or possession o f a high school diploma acquired f rom an accredited high school or GED equivalent testing program and graduation f rom a training course conducted by or approved by the Department and certi f ied by the Council on Law En f orcement Education and Training either prior to employment or during the f irst six (6) months o f employment....” plus twenty- f our months o f experience in correctional or security work f or a governmental agency or private corrections agency. NOTE: Success f ul completion o f the GED test is based upon standards established by the Oklahoma Department o f Education.
Special Requirements
Per 57 OS 510 applicants/employees in this job f amily shall be subject to the f ollowing additional requirements: c. satis f actory completion o f minimum testing or pro f essional evaluation through the Merit System o f Personnel Administration to determine the f itness o f the individual to serve in the position. Written evaluations shall be submitted to the Department o f Corrections; and
d. satis f actory completion o f physical in keeping with the conditions o f the job description on an annual basis and along the guidelines as established by the Department o f Corrections;
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time o f appointment in order to per f orm necessary travel.
Applicants will be subject to drug testing.
Applicants must be willing and able to work any assigned shi f t or day o f the week, and additional shi f ts as required .
NOTE: Employees in this job classi f ication may be designated as peace o f f icers by the Director and required to meet the training and screening requirements conducted by the Department and certi f ied by the Council on Law En f orcement Education and Training. (57 O.S. 510) Training will include physical conditioning, sel f -de f ense tactics, and receipt o f an application o f oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray.
No person who has received a verdict o f guilty or pled guilty or nolo contendere to any o f f ense required to register pursuant to the Sex O f f enders Registration Act is eligible f or employment as a peace o f f icer. (57 O.S. 589.C)
No person who has been convicted o f a crime o f moral turpitude who has not received a f ull pardon f rom the proper agency is eligible f or employment as a peace o f f icer. (70 O.S. 3311)
No person who has been convicted o f a nonviolent f elony and who has not received a f ull pardon f rom the proper authority, or who has been convicted o f any other f elony o f f ense, is eligible f or employment in this job classi f ication. (21 O.S. 1283.B)
No person who has been convicted o f a misdemeanor crime o f domestic violence, who has not been pardoned f or, or had the conviction expunged or set aside, or is subject to a court order that restrains the person f rom harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the partners’ child or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner or the partners’ child in reasonable f ear o f bodily injury and includes a f inding that the person is a credible threat; or who has been dishonorably discharged f rom any branch o f the armed services is eligible f or employment in this job classi f ication. (18 U.S.C. 922)
