This is an opportunity for a fast-moving journalist to join a newsroom where speed, accuracy, and relevance are central to the <work.You>’ll serve as part of a 24/7 news operation, monitoring developments and identifying stories that require immediate attention.The role is designed for a news-driven reporter with strong instincts and a “see it, write it” <mentality.You>’ll produce concise, high-quality spot news while tracking major stories and surfacing important developments to subject-matter experts.Success requires curiosity, urgency, sound editorial judgment, and the ability to thrive in a constantly changing <environment.You>’ll collaborate closely with journalists across teams and contribute to digital-first coverage shaped around audience needs.The role is remote and offers the opportunity to make an immediate impact in a high-energy, nationally focused newsroom.
Accountabilities
- Monitor breaking news, emerging developments, social platforms, and other relevant sources to identify important stories and developments in real time.
- Write accurate, concise, quick-turn spot news stories in response to breaking and developing events.
- Continuously monitor key stories and proactively flag significant developments to reporters, editors, and subject-matter experts.
- Work closely with journalists across the newsroom to coordinate coverage and ensure timely, high-quality reporting.
- Apply strong editorial judgment to determine which developments warrant immediate attention and activation.
- Produce content consistent with a concise, audience-first Smart Brevity writing approach.
- Research stories using digital resources, social media, and publicly available information while maintaining accuracy and appropriate journalistic standards.
- Contribute to a 24/7 news operation with a strong sense of urgency and personal accountability.
- Stay current on the evolving digital and social media landscape and incorporate relevant tools and sources into reporting workflows.
- Collaborate across teams to develop and deliver quality content efficiently in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
- Embrace responsible use of AI tools to enhance productivity, creativity, and efficiency while continuing to apply independent editorial judgment.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience writing and reporting in a fast-paced news environment.
- Proven ability to monitor developing stories and quickly identify, investigate, and activate on news.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside journalists and cross-functional teams.
- Strong personal organization, urgency, and accountability, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a high-pressure environment.
- Genuine passion for news and strong awareness of current events and the broader news landscape.
- Commitment to Smart Brevity principles and concise, audience-focused storytelling.
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital journalism, social media, and modern news-gathering practices.
- Ability to work effectively across teams while maintaining high editorial and accuracy standards.

- Comfort learning and responsibly incorporating AI-enabled tools into everyday editorial workflows.
