Variety Development Assistant - Seasonal

About the Opportunity

The Seasonal Phenotyping Assistant will support the breeding team at the Moulay test plot by assisting with field phenotyping activities, data collection, plant and fruit evaluations, sample handling, and general plot maintenance. The position requires attention to detail, accuracy in data recording, and the ability to perform fieldwork efficiently while adhering to breeding protocols and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Field Trials: Plan, organize, conduct, and monitor field trials under local Moulay conditions to ensure trial setup, execution, and data integrity.
• Phenotyping: Perform accurate and consistent field phenotyping, including detailed observation and recording of key horticultural traits.
• Selection Evaluation: Independently evaluate selections and varieties for performance, including yield, field ratings, shelf life, and flavor.
• Data Management: Collect, record, and manage high-quality data using systems like iForm and Excel.
• Collaboration: Work closely with research farming teams to support trial preparation, agronomic activities, and post-harvest evaluations.
• Fruit Flow: Organize and oversee the flow of test plot fruit for overseas post-harvest evaluations.
• Reporting & Tours: Contribute to technical materials, reports, and presentation slides, and assist in organizing test plot tours.

Candidate Profile

As a Variety Development Associate (Seasonal) , you will play a critical role in supporting our cutting-edge breeding and variety development pipeline. Reporting to Douae Lamrahli, you will be hands-on in the field, managing trials, collecting precise data, and evaluating top-tier berry selections (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries) to help bring only the best berries to consumers worldwide.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

Education & Experience

• Academic Degree: Technician in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field (with relevant field experience).
• Professional Experience: 1 to 2 years of experience in field trials, crop evaluation, or agricultural research (experience with berries is a strong plus).

Technical Skills & Expertise

• Field Trial Management: Intermediate
• Phenotyping (trait evaluation & scoring): Advanced
• Data Collection Tools (iForm, Excel, etc.): Advanced
• Statistical Understanding (basic trial analysis): Basic to Intermediate
• Agronomic Practices: Intermediate
• Report Writing & Presentations: Intermediate
• Driving: Valid license required

Language & Leadership

• Foreign Language: Proficiency in English.
• People Management: Not required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in irrigation management and fertigation strategies in berry crops.
• Knowledge of pest and disease management in berries.
• Experience working in an international or multicultural research environment.
• Background working specifically with breeding programs or variety development pipelines.
• Exposure to statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, or similar).
