About The Role
DescriptionJOB SUMMARY
- Under the supervision and/or direction of the OB RN staff/Manager of OB, the CNA provides age and developmentally
- appropriate direct clinical care to preemie, neonate, infant, adolescent and adult patient populations. Provides care
- with a focus on patient safety. Assesses supply levels, orders and restocks as necessary. Answers phones and call
- lights professionally. Assembles, disassembles patient charts. Utilizes the EMR system to initiate physician orders.
- Assists nursing in the care of obstetrical and newborn patients according to the Scope of Service for Obstetrics.
- Adheres to and practices the St. John's Health Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance
- Improvement activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patient Care - Newborns
- Observes newborn characteristics and behaviors, reports abnormal findings to RN in a timely manner, such as, vital
signs, voiding and stooling, skin color/condition, muscle tone, feeding patterns, cord care.
- Assists with newborn admission to the nursery; such as vital signs, weight, measurements, ID bands.
- Takes vital signs, performs all newborn care (baths, daily weights, hearing screens, assists with diaper changes) in
a timely manner.
- Provides bath demonstrations, as needed to parents. Assists RN with patient/family education by supplying written
materials and setting up teaching videos for viewing.
- Maintains, develops and updates skills to implement ideal care and service. Attends applicable in-services and
- programs.
- Patient Care - Maternity Patient
- Prepares patient room, bed and hydrotherapy tub as needed for admission. Assists RN with laboring patient as
needed.
- Assists patient getting up to the bathroom, changing pads/chux and assisting with pericare as needed.
- Assists with breastfeeding as needed.
- Provides supplies to patients as needed (pads, panties, peribottle, hygiene). Refills water pitchers, provides juice,
snacks, appropriately.
- Assists with gown and linen changes daily and as needed. Restocks bathroom with towels/washcloths daily.
Assistive Responsibilities
- Assesses stock and supply levels, orders supplies as needed or notifies appropriately of supply needs. Restocks
appropriately according to par levels: birthing rooms, monitor drawers, delivery cares, servos and clerical supplies.
- Cleaning: instruments and delivery carts, monitor cables, hydrotherapy tub, bassinets, photo-therapy lights/bed and
patient rooms as needed.
- Prepares equipment: pre-warms incubators and servos; assembles and sets up oxygen and suction on servos.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by reporting malfunctioning equipment to biomed. Keeps hallways
free of equipment and supplies.
- Checks refrigerator, freezer and warmer temperatures daily. Adjusts temps as needed. Notifies maintenance when
temps are out of range.
Clerical Responsibilities
- Assembles and labels patient charts appropriately for admission. Prepares nursing Kardex. Disassembles charts
after patient discharge.
- Enters physician orders into EMR accurately. Enters height, weight, and allergies into patient profile. Enters charges
daily for each obstetric patient.
- Answers phone and call lights professionally. Accurately relays messages to appropriate person(s) in a timely
manner.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
- Required: Completion of CNA or EMT coursework. Must be able to read and write English, understand basic hospital/medical
- terminology and simple math.
Minimum Work Experience
- Required: Good communication, interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Basic computer skills.
- Required Licenses: Wyoming CNA certification OR WY EMT and current BLS. Additional NRP certification preferred.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
- Working Conditions: Six bed LDRP with five swing rooms. Level one nursery. Rapidly changing census and patient acuity. Frequent
- stressful situations. Must be on-site at the St. John's Health campus or other facilities to perform the duties of this
- role.
- Physical Requirements: Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, computer and phone use. Irregular meals/lunch breaks. Must be able to lift up
- to 50 pounds and possess the ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment and supplies.

Reports to: Manager of Obstetrics
Internal & External Contacts: Patients, families, visitors, hospital employees, physicians, community agencies and vendors.
