About The Role
Building OfficialThe City of Tomball is accepting applications for a Building Official the role will direct and supervise the operations of the permits and building inspection department and related personnel. Interpret, enforce, and review building plans for permitting according to International Codes for various public and private entities. Provide information on the City’s construction requirements and perform inspections. This position operates with considerable independence and is expected to use professional judgment and make sound decisions. The ability to work well with the public is essential to this position.

Direct Supervision Director of Community Development
Building Official functions include but are not limited to the following.
Supervision and Management: Direct and oversee the operations of the permits, plan review and building inspection department. Supervise and guide related personnel.
Plan Interpretation and Enforcement: Interpret, enforce, and review building plans for permitting in line with International and local codes.Cater to various public and private entities during the review process.
Information and Inspection: Provide insights on the City’s construction requirements to concerned parties. Conduct necessary building and construction inspections.
Public Relations: Engage effectively with the public, addressing concerns and offering assistance attending city council meetings and public hearings to respond to questions and attends conferences as needed.
Decision Making and Autonomy: Operate independently, taking the initiative in various tasks. Exercise professional judgment in making well-informed decisions.
Monitor Building Division budget.

Knowledge of international building codes.
Considerable knowledge and interpretation of applicable codes, existing city ordinances, laws and regulations governing the building construction industry.
Knowledge of construction and of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building, gas, swimming pool regulations and codes, fire safety regulations and codes and other codes pertaining to weeds, abandoned vehicles, etc.
Terms, symbols, and techniques used by architects, engineers and designers in construction plans and specifications.
Knowledge of data, format requirements for plats, maps, diagrams, construction material quality control testing and plan review.
Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques used in public property improvement projects, (e.g., streets, drainage, curb, and gutter, etc.)
Construction projects include electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning, and heating.
Good knowledge of applicable federal grant programs and procedures.
Good knowledge of mathematics such as business math, simple algebra, or elementary statistics in- order to compute permits fees, basic measurements taken in the field and for preparing a budget.
Equipment and Tools commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
Microsoft Office, google workspace, blue bean, Arc GIS, Teams, Microsoft Outlook, TravelPerk, Dropbox, Google Meet.
Work Environment or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
The work is typically performed indoors in an office setting and occasionally outdoors.
May regularly be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electric shock.
Overnight travel may be required.

SALARY
- Hiring range - $82,784- $86,923 ($39.80 - $41.79)
- Salary range - $82,784 - $124,176
- **Salary is dependent on qualifications and certifications**
Qualifications
Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
Education High school diploma: College degree preferred.
Experience Minimum of 5 years previous relevant work experience is required. Two years of supervisory experience in a building inspections function.
Certifications CBO or MCP, or able to obtain within 1 year.
Licensing Current and valid Texas Driver’s License with driving record that will meet City guidelines. A Driver License must be maintained during employment.
