What We’re Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Project Manager – Traffic/ITS to support our growing transportation practice in the New York metropolitan area. This is a part-time/temporary position ideal for an experienced transportation professional with extensive traffic engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) expertise.

As a Senior Project Manager, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining trusted advisor relationships with local, statewide, and regional clients. You will work closely with our 30+ person Traffic Engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Department and other multi-disciplinary staff in the pursuit and delivery of projects for clients such as the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYC DDC), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA), counties, municipalities, and other regional clients throughout New York and New Jersey.

The successful candidate will coordinate staff workload with other transportation infrastructure departments within Michael Baker International, lead strategic positioning efforts for transportation infrastructure opportunities, and support the successful execution of projects. This individual will also help expand Michael Baker International's capabilities and market presence through transportation planning, traffic operations, modeling, ITS solutions, and emerging transportation technologies.

Michael Baker International offers a hybrid and flexible working arrangement with offices in New York City and Newark, New Jersey.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead teams of engineers and designers in all aspects of transportation planning, traffic engineering, ITS design, and project delivery for roadway, highway, safety, and mobility improvement projects.
  • Manage projects to meet schedule, budget, quality, and client satisfaction objectives.
  • Lead, assign, and review the work of project delivery teams while providing technical oversight and guidance.
  • Monitor project progress and identify scope changes and additional service opportunities.
  • Mentor and develop technical staff while overseeing project budgets and schedules.
  • Serve as a visible and active member of the New York and New Jersey transportation community through professional organizations, client engagement, and industry events.
  • Coordinate with transportation staff across Michael Baker offices, including Manhattan, Newark, and Hamilton, while managing projects and proposals for regional and local clients.
  • Ensure implementation of QA/QC practices on all traffic engineering and ITS assignments.
  • Support business development activities, proposal preparation, and client relationship management.
  • Participate in and pursue opportunities involving emerging transportation technologies, including Electric Vehicles (EV), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Connected Vehicles (CV), and Autonomous Vehicles (AV).

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • 15+ years of traffic engineering, ITS, transportation planning, and/or roadway design experience with progressively increasing responsibility.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in NY and/or NJ required; PTOE certification highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with NYSDOT, NYCDOT, NJDOT, PANYNJ, NJTA, and/or other regional transportation agencies.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory, and staff mentoring capabilities.
  • Strong project management experience with a demonstrated record of successful project delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal development, public presentations, and client engagement.
  • Proven business development and client relationship management experience preferred.
  • Strong engineering judgment and commitment to quality, safety, and financial performance.
  • Desire to serve as a leader within both the company and the transportation profession.

Compensation

The approximate compensation range for this position is $90 to $100 per hour. This range is a good-faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be based on factors including education, qualifications, experience, skill set, and work location.
