JOB DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Assistant performs four essential roles in the function of the Laboratory
- Lab Customer Service
- Phlebotomist
- Lab Order Entry including handling of patient information and test results.
- Specimen Processing and Shipment of samples to Reference Labs
- Provides Exceptional Customer Service to all stakeholders in a manner that supports the mission, vision and values of the Laboratory and UVMHN
- Obtains specimens for testing according to policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
- Performs administrative duties to meet the needs of the Laboratory Department and the customers served by the laboratory
- Processes specimens prior to testing, ensuring quality and adhering to established policies and procedures
- Works collaboratively with coworkers, Technologists and other staff within department and in other departments throughout the Organization
- Uses a variety of communication skills to meet the needs of the laboratory department and the customers served by the laboratory
- Participates in continuing education and departmental development functions to support professional growth and departmental initiatives
EDUCATION
- Able to read, write and speak the English language
- High School Diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
- Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended
- Phlebotomy Experience is a plus
- Computer entry or word processing skills required
- Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable
- Good interpersonal communication skills required
- Approximately six months to a year is required to learn the job for satisfactory performance. The Laboratory Director will evaluate this.
