About The Role

Job Overview

This position provides assistance and/or performs basic specified treatments and procedures under the direct supervision of the charge nurse or designated RN. This position may also perform non-direct patient care activities as assigned, requested, or directed. Duties include: stocking of supplies, cleaning equipment, temperature checks, performing EKGs, transporting patients as needed, collection of urine drug screens. Lead ED Tech is responsible for orientation of new techs, coordinates CBEs, maintains equipment, coordinates ED Tech assignments, Coordinates weekly room checks for equipment, assists in recruitment and retention activities, assists in scheduling, coordinates ED tech meetings, assists with evaluations, monitors documentation. This position may transcribe and complete verbal orders for electrocardiograms and Holter Monitoring performed in the Emergency Department.

Job Requirements

High School Degree or GED

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)

1-2 years experience Clinical and ED Technician

Job Responsibilities

Performs and documents basic patient care related procedures under the direct supervision of an RN. Maintains competency of tasks in which the technician has been trained. Follows appropriate procedures for performing EKGs, and collection of lab specimens within the parameters of documented competency. Transports patients by stretcher or wheelchair. Seeks clarification from the RN when in doubt regarding appropriate process. Completes assigned tasks within required timeframe.

Maintains a safe environment. Reports real and potential safety hazards to the charge nurse and completes safety event report as necessary. Complies with Infection Control policies. Demonstrates knowledge of safety/emergency policies and procedures and appropriately corrects any identified hazards.

Performs supply, equipment, and environmental-related activities as required and described in accountabilities. Recognizes and reports problems with supply/equipment availability in a timely manner. Performs and documents temperature checks, quality controls and equipment maintenance as directed.

Demonstrates leadership and teamwork through appropriate and effective orientation of new ED techs and participating in the development and implementation of CBEs for ED Technicians. Consistently and effectively completes ED tech work schedules, shift assignments and room checks. Participates in a TriHealth or unit based committee/task force as needed. Has met all Unit and TriHealth requirements such as annual competencies. Participates in conflict resolution and team problem solving. Has attended the required number of staff meetings.

Communicates effectively with others. Shows respect to patients, families and co-workers. Reports patient related information in a timely manner. Reports problems in completing assignment/tasks in a timely manner to the appropriate person. Communicates issues and barriers related to ED tech duties and work flow to charge nurse. Documents observations and tasks performed. Works in collaboration with all members of the health care team. Utilizes chain of command appropriately.
