Role Summary
We are seeking a visionary Enterprise Data Governance Consultant who is a recognized thought leader in enterprise data management. This is a senior strategic role for an individual who has shaped data governance cultures, built governance frameworks from the ground up, and influenced C-suite decisions across complex, regulated, and multi-industry environments. The ideal candidate brings a rare combination of deep technical knowledge, regulatory expertise, and executive-level communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Thought Leadership
- Define and evangelize the enterprise data governance vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the internal and external thought leader on data governance, data quality, metadata management, and data privacy — contributing to whitepapers, industry forums, and executive briefings.
- Establish and chair Data Governance Councils and executive decision forums, driving accountability and data ownership across the organization.
- Influence and align business, legal, compliance, security, analytics, and technology stakeholders to build a culture of trusted, secure, and fit-for-purpose data.
Governance Framework & Operating Model
- Design and implement enterprise data governance operating models , including governance workflows, data ownership structures, stewardship programs, and escalation paths.
- Develop and enforce data classification, metadata standards, business glossaries, and data catalog frameworks across enterprise data assets.
- Build and manage risk registers, control evidence, KPI reporting, and issue remediation processes to ensure ongoing governance health.
- Lead data lifecycle, retention, and records management policies across data warehouses, data lakes, and cloud environments.
Privacy, Compliance & Regulatory Governance
- Lead enterprise data privacy programs ensuring compliance with GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, GLBA, SOX, PCI-DSS , and other applicable regulations.
- Conduct and govern Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), and Transfer Impact Assessments (TIAs) .
- Implement Privacy by Design principles across data platforms, applications, and analytics initiatives.
- Partner with legal and compliance teams to manage third-party data processing, cross-border data transfers, and regulatory audit readiness.
Data Quality & Metadata Management
- Define and operationalize data quality rules, KPIs, and issue management frameworks to improve data reliability and fitness for use.
- Oversee data lineage, data discovery, and data classification initiatives using tools such as OneTrust, Collibra, Alation, or equivalent platforms.
- Drive Master Data Management (MDM) and Reference Data governance across enterprise systems.
AI & Cloud Governance
- Establish AI Governance and Responsible AI frameworks to ensure ethical, transparent, and compliant use of AI/ML and GenAI technologies.
- Govern data assets across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud environments, ensuring cloud-native governance controls are embedded.
- Lead governance for data integration, migration, and transformation programs across complex multi-system landscapes.
Executive Engagement & Team Leadership
- Create and present executive dashboards and governance reporting covering data risks, issue aging, remediation status, control readiness, and program health.
- Lead, mentor, and coach cross-functional, multi-geography teams (50–200+ members) spanning business, technology, vendor, and compliance workstreams.
- Drive post-merger or large-scale data and analytics integration governance across enterprise application portfolios.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Experience
- 15+ years of progressive experience in enterprise data governance, data management, and data privacy across multiple industries (Retail, Telecom, Healthcare, Manufacturing, or regulated sectors preferred).
- Proven track record of building governance programs from scratch and scaling them across global organizations.
- Experience leading large global teams (50–100+ members) in matrixed, cross-functional environments.
- Demonstrated success in post-merger data integration governance across 50+ enterprise systems.
Technical Expertise
- Deep knowledge of Data Governance frameworks (DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, or equivalent).
- Proficiency with data governance and privacy platforms : OneTrust, Collibra, Alation, ServiceNow, or equivalent.
- Hands-on experience with Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, and Cloud Platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Working knowledge of SQL and data architecture concepts.
- Familiarity with ERP, CRM, PLM, and enterprise application ecosystems .
Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge
- Expert-level understanding of GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, GLBA, SOX, PCI-DSS , and emerging global privacy regulations.
- Experience conducting 150+ privacy assessments, DPIAs, PIAs, and TIAs .
- Strong background in GRC (Governance, Risk & Compliance) frameworks and audit readiness.
Leadership & Communication
- Exceptional ability to influence without authority across C-suite, legal, compliance, engineering, and business stakeholders.
- Strong executive communication skills — capable of translating complex governance concepts into business value.
- Experience building and presenting governance scorecards, risk dashboards, and executive decision forums .
