The Senior Certified Coder analyzes complex clinical and demographic information to assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT/HCPCS codes across outpatient, surgical, and inpatient encounters. This role supports accurate DRG assignment, ensures compliance with regulatory standards, and serves as a resource for coding guidance across multiple care settings.
Performs coding for outpatient, surgical, and inpatient encounters, including ICD-10-PCS and CPT procedure coding. Assigns and validates MS-DRGs and/or APCs and ensures appropriate severity of illness and risk of mortality capture. Reviews complex documentation, performs queries, and resolves discrepancies and complex coding edits. Manages multiple work queues while maintaining coding accuracy and productivity. Provides mentorship and guidance to coding staff and collaborates with CDI and providers to ensure alignment of documentation and coding.
- Partners with CDI, providers, and coding teams to resolve complex documentation and coding issues.
- Communicates coding decisions and documentation needs clearly to stakeholders.
- Independently resolves complex coding issues using advanced coding knowledge and available resources.
- Manages high-volume, multi-setting work with urgency and accountability.
- Identifies workflow improvements to enhance coding accuracy and productivity.
- Ensures coding outcomes support reimbursement, reporting, and compliance.
- Applies updated coding practices to improve consistency and performance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE
- 1 year coding experience
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED
LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS
- AHIMA-RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) OR AHIMA-RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) OR AHIMA-CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) OR AAPC-CPC (Certified Professional Coder) OR AAPC-CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder), AAPPC-COC (Certified Outpatient Coder)
SKILLS
- Day-to-day work requires: applying ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT/HCPCS coding across outpatient, surgical, and inpatient encounters; utilizing coding guidelines and DRG and/or APC logic to ensure accurate and compliant code assignment; reviewing complex documentation and resolving routine and advanced coding edits; managing multiple work queues; and independently interpreting clinical documentation to support coding accuracy and consistency.
