ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Policy Officer will provide critical support to the North America team in advancing ONE’s advocacy and policy objectives. This role involves research, data analysis, and high-level document preparation and drafting.

The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, with a good capacity to understand and synthetize complex policy issues into clear and compelling background materials, and capable of managing multiple priorities within a fast-paced, dynamic team environment. This is a full-time, opportunity reporting directly to Senior Director for Policy, North America and based in ONE’s Washington, D.C. office.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

Support the Senior Director for Policy and Government Relations teams in implementing ONE’s advocacy strategy, with a primary focus on the United States and some occasional support for ONE’s advocacy in Canada.

Draft research reports and policy briefs that are usable and relevant for North American decision-makers on ONE’s main development issue areas: health and economic opportunities in Africa, including development finance, foreign aid, domestic and international health spending, trade and electricity access.

Summarize findings, analyze data and draft recommendations. Review and edit documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, fact and data checking, and alignment with ONE’s messaging and strategic goals.

Draft and manage the production of high-impact policy documents, such as flagship reports, content for ONE’s website, blog posts, talking points, and briefing materials for senior staff, in coordination with ONE’s Communication and Government Relations teams.

Stay attuned to international development policy trends, especially around foreign aid, global health, development finance, trade and access to electricity in Africa, by attending and reporting on think tanks and other organizations’ events in Washington D.C.

Build and maintain relationships with think tanks and other organizations involved in foreign affairs and development policy in Washington D.C.

Assist in organizing events and trainings, including through helping prepare training materials and providing logistical support for events in and around the Hill

WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE

Bachelor’s Degree preferred in political science, international development, economics or other related field

4+ years’ relevant professional experience in the field of policy analysis, international development, and/or in political or government offices (will consider internship experience)

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite and data management software (ex. Excel or others)

Ability to synthetize complex documents and issues and write in clear, succinct language

Excellent English writing skills

Ability to understand and analyze data, especially related to development finance and/or health policy

Ability to manage multiple, shifting priorities under tight deadlines while performing in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Related work history in poverty and infectious disease alleviation, advocacy, policy, legislation and/or demonstrable interest in the causes ONE supports a strong asset

Related work history and/or understanding or U.S. policy and decision-making processes around international development, foreign aid, trade and foreign affairs, including through Congress and the White House a strong asset.

Authorization to work in the United States is required

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: $70,000 - $85,000 annual salary. This salary range is based on compensation survey data for similar organizations and is used to set pay internally at ONE. Where a new hire’s salary falls within this range is based on a variety of factors, including the budget available for this position.

LANGUAGE SKILLS & TRAVEL: Fluency in English required. Fluency in other languages such as French and German is a plus. Travel up to 5% international and/or domestic.
