ABOUT THE ROLE

  • To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring a Senior
  • Camp Counselor situated within the Camp Department. The Camp Department plays a vital role in creating
  • engaging, safe, and enriching summer experiences for youth through structured programming, social-emotional
  • development, and community-building activities. The individual hired as Unit Head will oversee a group of
  • campers and staff, ensuring strong supervision, high-quality programming, and smooth day-to-day operations.
  • This leadership role is responsible for supporting staff, managing group dynamics, and maintaining a safe,
  • organized, and positive camp environment. This role reports directly to the Camp Director.
  • Across the agency, our seasonal and part-time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by
  • supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Agency Expectations

  • ● Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, while following
  • established processes and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required.
  • ● Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and
  • materials, and/or supporting cost-effective operations.
  • ● Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross-department teams to ensure clear
  • communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
  • ● Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff,
  • partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.

Role Expectations

  • ● Supervise and oversee a designated unit of campers and staff, ensuring safety, engagement, and overall
  • group success
  • ● Lead, support, and coach Senior and Junior Counselors, providing ongoing guidance, feedback, and
  • supervision
  • ● Ensure accurate daily attendance and headcounts across all groups within the unit
  • ● Maintain proper staff-to-camper ratios at all times and adjust coverage as needed
  • ● Oversee daily schedules and transitions, ensuring activities run smoothly and on time
  • ● Ensure all groups are prepared for daily activities, including swim, trips, and special events
  • ● Support behavior management across the unit, addressing concerns proactively and consistently
  • ● Serve as the primary point of contact for staff concerns, camper issues, and parent communication
  • when needed
  • ● Monitor staff performance and uphold expectations around professionalism, engagement, and
  • supervision
  • ● Ensure all safety protocols and emergency procedures are followed at all times
  • ● Assist with overall camp operations, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, and special programming
  • ● Maintain strong communication with the Camp Director regarding unit performance, incidents, and
  • needs
  • ● Participate in leadership meetings, staff trainings, and professional development opportunities
  • ● Foster a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented camp culture

QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • ● Must be at least 21 years old
  • ● Significant experience working with children in a camp, school, or youth program setting
  • ● Previous leadership or supervisory experience required
  • ● Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • ● Demonstrated ability to manage staff and camper behavior effectively
  • ● Ability to multitask and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment
  • ● Dependable, punctual, and able to lead by example
  • ● Comfortable participating in all camp activities, including outdoor play and daily swim
  • ● Ability to maintain accurate records, ensure safety, and oversee multiple groups at once
  • ● Must pass background check and complete all required onboarding and compliance trainings

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ● Previous experience as a Unit Head, Camp Supervisor, or similar leadership role
  • ● Background in education, psychology, recreation, or a related field
  • ● CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp)
  • ● Experience supporting children with diverse learning, behavioral, or social-emotional needs
  • ● Strong conflict resolution and staff management skills
  • ● Ability to take initiative, lead independently, and make informed decisions
  • ● Familiarity with camp operations, scheduling, and safety procedures

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Commonpoint offers competitive base salaries benchmarked against comparable nonprofit organizations in the
  • New York metropolitan area. Salaries are determined based on internal and external equity, as well as each
  • position’s scope, qualifications, and organizational impact. We believe in compensating staff fairly and
  • consistently, ensuring that all salary decisions align with our mission-driven commitment to equity and
  • transparency. To maintain fairness across the organization, salary offers are set according to established salary bands and are
  • not subject to negotiation. New hires typically start near the beginning of the salary range to allow for growth
  • based on performance, professional development, and tenure. Seasonal Salary/Rate: $4,000 - $4,500 | Starting Salary: $4,000
