Description

This course examines communication, language, and literacy as they emerge in monolingual and multilingual children from infancy through early childhood. Participants examine how language, socialization, communicative competence, and literacy develop within, and are impacted by, children’s sociocultural contexts. Participants are introduced to communication disorders and other learning variations of the early years that affect language and literacy learning. Specific practices are identified to enhance the experience of young children who are receiving services in school as English language learners. Modifications and adaptations to support children with learning variations are explored.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver course content and materials aligned with the program curriculum.
• Grade and evaluate student performance in a timely manner, providing constructive feedback.
• Maintain open communication with students, including scheduled office hours or availability for consultation.
• Submit final grades and required course documentation (e.g., attendance records) by institutional deadlines.
• Collaborate with program faculty on course coordination and attend relevant program meetings, if necessary.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in early childhood special education, or related field, required, doctorate preferred.
• 5 or more years of teaching young children with disabilities, preferred.
• Experience in public schools, preferred.
• Critical orientation to issues of access and equity, preferred.
• Strong skills in communication, collaboration, and organization, preferred.
• Experience teaching at the graduate level, preferred.
