About The Role

GENERAL Date December 2025 Location Aggeneys, Northern Cape Operations (Please indicate the operation – by ticking the appropriate box) GB BMM Job Grade C4 (Paterson) / M8 (Vedanta) ROLE CONTEXT Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) operates two major mining complexes in the Northern Cape: · Gamsberg – a large-scale open ‑ pit zinc operation requiring high ‑ precision drill & blast execution to achieve fragmentation, slope stability and production targets. · Black Mountain Mine (BMM) – an underground operation where drill & blast quality directly influences development advance, stope performance, dilution control and safety. The Technician (C4) is responsible for the installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of instrumentation, process control systems, and associated equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To ensure the reliability, accuracy, and availability of instrumentation and control systems by performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities, thereby supporting safe operations, process stability, product quality, and organizational performance objectives. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. PLC Systems · Maintain, troubleshoot and optimize PLC control systems · Diagnose PLC hardware and software faults · Develop, modify and test PLC programs under approved Management of change (MOC) process · Replace faulty PLC components including CPUs, I/O modules, communication cards and power supplies. · Verify plant control logic after maintenance activities. · Participate in commissioning of new plant equipment and control systems. 2. SCADA Systems · Maintain and optimize SCADA platforms. · Configure operator displays, graphics, alarms and trends. · Ensure accurate plant monitoring and data acquisition. · Investigate communication failures between PLCs and SCADA. · Maintain historical data collection and reporting systems. · Support operators with SCADA related issues. · Improve alarm management to reduce nuisance alarms. 3. Fault Finding and Troubleshooting · Investigate instrumentation and control system failures. · Analyze root causes of equipment malfunctions. · Restore equipment to operational condition within required timeframes. · Provide recommendations to prevent recurring failures. 4. Process Control Systems · Support PLC, DCS, SCADA, and other process control systems. · Assist with configuration, testing, and commissioning of control systems. · Monitor control loops and optimize process performance. · Participate in system upgrades and improvement projects. 5. Installation and Commissioning · Install new instrumentation and control equipment. · Assist in commissioning new plant equipment and projects. · Verify correct setup, wiring, communication, and functionality. Ensure installations comply with engineering specifications and standards. 6. Documentation and Reporting · Update maintenance management systems and equipment records. · Prepare maintenance reports and technical documentation. · Maintain accurate equipment histories. · Record all completed maintenance and calibration activities. 7. Safety, Health, Environment and Quality · Adhere to all safety procedures and statutory requirements. · Conduct risk assessments before commencing work. · Participate in safety meetings and investigations. · Ensure compliance with environmental and quality management standards. · Promote a strong safety culture. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Qualifications · Grade 12 (Matric). · National Diploma or N6 in Instrumentation, Process Control, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. · Trade Test Certificate: Instrumentation Technician/ Mechanician. Experience · Minimum 3-5 years' experience in mining/ mineral processing . · Experience working on process plant instrumentation systems. · Experience with calibration and fault-finding activities. Technical Competence · Process instrumentation principles. · Measurement and control systems. · PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems. · Industrial communication networks. · Calibration techniques and standards. · Electrical and electronic fundamentals. · Preventive and predictive maintenance methodologies. · Plant safety systems and standards. · Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
