DESCRIPTION

The Board of Industrial Trades shall regulate the practice of plumbers, gasfitters, electricians, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics, steam and other operating engineers, asbestos workers, elevator mechanics, elevator inspectors, except for those employed by the District of Columbia or by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and elevator contractors. The Board may establish bonding and insurance requirements, subcategories of licensure, education, and experience requirements for licensure, and other requirements.

COMMISSION MEMBERSHIP

The Board shall consist of 15 members, as follows

  • 3 plumbers
  • 2 electricians
  • 2 refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics
  • 2 steam and other operating engineers
  • 2 asbestos workers
  • 1 elevator mechanic
  • 1 elevator inspector
  • 1 elevator contractor
  • 1 consumer member.

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional members shall be licensed in the District and, at the time of their appointment, have been engaged in their practice for a period of not less than 3 years.

Consumer Members shall

Be at least 18 years of age;

Not be a practitioner of a profession or occupation supervised by that board, or in training to become one;

Not have a household member who is a practitioner of a profession or occupation supervised by that board, or in training to become one; and

Not own, operate, or be employed in or have a household member who owns, operates, or is employed in a business which has as its primary purpose the sale of goods or services to practitioners of a profession or occupation supervised by that board.

TIME COMMITMENT

The Board of Industrial Trades meets monthly.
