About The Role
GENERAL DESCRIPTION - PURPOSE OF ROLE
- The Machinist is responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts and
- components according to engineering specifications. They work with a variety of tools and equipment,
- such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer-controlled machines, to fabricate parts for use in
- manufacturing and production processes.
Essential Functions
- Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- r Set up and operate machine tools to perform machining operations, such as turning, milling,
- drilling, grinding, and boring, to produce metal parts to required specifications
- o Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining
- requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes
- o Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each job, and set up machines
- according to work instructions and safety guidelines
- o Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and
- gauges, to ensure conformance to specifications and quality standards
- . Identify and troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or work pieces during the machining
- process, and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency
- . Perform routine maintenance tasks on machine tools, including cleaning, Iubrication, and minor
- repairs, to ensure optimal performance and longevity
- o Adhere to safety protocols and procedures at all times, including wearing appropriate personal
- protective equipment (PPE), following machine safety guidelines, and reporting safety hazards or
- concerns
- o Maintain accurate records of machining operations, including job setups, tooling changes,
- production counts, and quality inspection results, in accordance with company policies and
- procedures
Qualifications and Experience

- . Completion of a machining program or vocational training in machining techniques, CNC
- programming, blueprint reading, and precision measurement is highly beneficial. Some
- employers may require candidates to have completed a formal machining program or
- apprenticeship.
- o Candidates should have practical experience in machining operations, including operating manual
- and CNC machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drills. Experience with both
- conventional and computer-controlled machining is valuable.
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical
- specifications to understand machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface
- finishes.
- Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, depth
- gauges, and dial indicators to ensure accuracy and quality in machined parts.
- o Experience selecting appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for machining jobs, and
- setting up machines according to work instructions and safety guidelines.
- o Experience inspecting machined parts using precision measuring tools and techniques to verify
- conformance to specifications and quality standards. Familiarity with quality control processes
- and procedures is essential.
- . Ability to troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or work pieces during the machining
- process and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency.
- o Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to machining operations, including proper
- handling of equipment, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to safety
- guidelines.

The successful candidate should
- o Understanding of various types of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drills,
- and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and
- applications of each type of machine tool.
- . Knowledge of different types of metals and materials commonly used in machining processes,
- including their properties, characteristics, and machining techniques.
- . Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to
- determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
- o Understanding of machining processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and boring,
- including knowledge of cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling requirements for each process.
- o Familiarity with precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators,
- and gauge blocks to measure and inspect machined parts for accuracy and quality.
- . Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to machining operations, including proper
- handling of machine tools, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to safety
- guidelines.
- . Skill in setting up and operating machine tools to perform machining operations according to
- engineering specifications and quality standards.
- . Ability to select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each machining job, and set
- up machines accurately and efficiently.
- . Skill in machining parts to precise dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes using manual and
- CNC machine tools.
- . Ability to troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or work pieces during the machining
- process, and make adjustments or corrections as needed to maintain quality and efficiency.
- . Skill in inspecting machined parts using precision measuring instruments and inspection
- techniques to verify conformance to specifications and quarterly standards.
- . Strong attention to detail and focus to ensure accuracy and precision in machining operations, and
- to detect any errors or defects in machined parts.
- o Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate machine controls, tooling, and
- work pieces with precision and accuracy.
- . Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and perform physically demanding tasks
- associated with machining operations.
- . Flexibility and adaptability to work with different types of machine tools, materials, and
- machining processes, and to adjust to changing priorities or production requirements.
- . Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a manufacturing environment, communicating
- effectively with coworkers and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth operations.
Education Requirements
