Scientist, Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS)

Summary of Responsibilities: The Scientist will support Lubrizol’s Chemical Design & Synthesis group by conducting hands-on laboratory experimentation, primarily focused on the synthesis, characterization, and development of new molecules—especially hyperdispersant chemistries for Paints & Coatings applications. This role will follow the guidance of the laboratory lead, contributing to innovative research and ensuring safe, efficient lab operations. Essential Job Functions: Conduct laboratory synthesis, characterization, and performance testing of organic and polymeric materials, under the direction of the laboratory lead and Technology Manager. Execute hands-on experiments, collect and analyze data, and maintain accurate laboratory records. Utilize technical knowledge and statistical tools to solve technical challenges as assigned. Compile, interpret, and communicate results to the laboratory lead, Technology Manager, colleagues, sponsors, and customers. Prepare technical reports and enter experimental results electronically upon completion of laboratory work. Maintain and ensure operational safety of laboratory equipment. Adhere to Lubrizol’s safety procedures and good housekeeping practices. Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives within the laboratory. Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements: B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field. 2+ years of experience in laboratory synthesis of organic and/or polymeric compounds (industrial or academic). Familiarity with analytical instrumentation and methodology (ex. NMR, FTIR, GPC, etc.) Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team. Strong communication skills in English; fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese will be advantageous. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office products.
