About The Role
Job Title
Mechanical Engineer – Design (Medium Voltage Switchgear)
Job Purpose
To execute detailed mechanical design and engineering of Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear panels and assemblies, ensuring structural integrity, manufacturability, compliance with IEC requirements, and smooth coordination with electrical engineering and production teams.
Key Responsibilities 1. Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Design sheet metal enclosures, panel structures, and internal mounting arrangements for MV switchgear (AIS/GIS up to 36kV or company scope).
- Develop GA drawings, fabrication drawings, and detailed part drawings.
- Ensure compliance with IEC 62271 requirements related to enclosure, IP protection, internal arc classification, and mechanical strength.
- Perform structural strength checks and support short-circuit withstand requirements from a mechanical perspective.
- Design busbar supports, cable compartments, gland plates, and breaker mounting structures.
- Product Development & Standardization
- Develop and maintain standard mechanical design modules and libraries.
- Optimize designs for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
- Support design improvements based on shop floor feedback and site learnings.
- Thermal & Ventilation Considerations
- Coordinate with electrical team for temperature rise requirements.
- Design ventilation paths and airflow management to meet thermal performance criteria.
- Support temperature rise test preparations.
- Manufacturing & Project Support
- Coordinate with production for fabrication feasibility and assembly clarity.
- Support FAT preparation related to mechanical aspects.
- Resolve mechanical NCRs through root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 4–8 years of experience in switchgear, panel board, or similar sheet metal enclosure industry.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal design and fabrication processes.
- Hands-on experience in SolidWorks / AutoCAD / similar 3D modeling tools.
- Understanding of IEC 62271 enclosure and internal arc requirements.
- Knowledge of surface treatment, powder coating, and corrosion protection standards.
- Basic understanding of busbar support design and short-circuit mechanical forces.
