About The Role

  • Wood is currently recruiting for an experienced PMC Senior Automation & Control Engineer for ADNOC Gas to join us and make an impact within our Oil, Gas & New Energies business.
  • Due to the nature of the projects and client expectation, the position will be at client office in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Role

  • The PMC Senior Automation & Control Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership, engineering assurance, and oversight of Automation, Instrumentation & Control Systems throughout FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up phases of major Oil & Gas projects.
  • The position will monitor and review the EPC Contractor's engineering activities and deliverables, ensuring compliance with project specifications, client requirements, standards, applicable international codes, approved design philosophies, quality requirements, schedule, and HSE objectives.

Autotomation & Control Engineering

  • Lead and provide technical assurance for Automation and Control engineering activities.
  • Review and approve EPC Contractor engineering deliverables related to:
  • DCS / ICSS
  • PLC and SCADA systems
  • ESD / SIS
  • Fire & Gas systems
  • HIPPS, where applicable
  • Control system architecture
  • Cause & Effect diagrams
  • Control narratives and philosophies
  • I/O lists and instrument indexes
  • Alarm and trip philosophy
  • Logic diagrams and functional specifications
  • Sequence and interlock diagrams
  • System configuration and database documents
  • Communication and network architecture
  • Ensure automation systems are designed for safe, reliable, maintainable, and efficient plant operation.
  • Review interfaces between control systems, package units, electrical systems, and other plant systems.

PMC / EPC Contractor Management

  • Monitor and manage EPC Contractor progress for Automation & Control engineering activities.
  • Review contractor deliverables, technical submissions, calculations, specifications, and design documents.
  • Identify engineering gaps, technical risks, delays, and non-conformities and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed in accordance with the approved project schedule.
  • Participate in technical meetings, progress meetings, design reviews, HAZOP/HAZID, SIL assessments, model reviews, and interface meetings.
  • Review and respond to technical queries, deviations, concessions, and requests for information.
  • Coordinate with the Client/IPMT, EPC Contractor, OEMs, vendors, Operations, Maintenance, and other engineering disciplines.

Control System & ICSS

  • Provide technical oversight of DCS, SIS/ESD, F&G, PLC, SCADA, and associated automation systems.
  • Review system architecture, redundancy, availability, cybersecurity interfaces, communication networks, and system capacity.
  • Review control logic, sequences, interlocks, permissives, trips, alarms, and shutdown functions.
  • Ensure proper integration of packaged equipment control systems with the main plant ICSS.
  • Review Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus, IEC 61850, or other applicable communication interfaces.
  • Verify that automation systems meet project functional and operational requirements

Safety Instrumented Systems

  • Participate in SIL assessments and review SIL-related engineering deliverables.
  • Review SRS, logic diagrams, cause & effect, voting arrangements, shutdown philosophy, and proof-test requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 and project requirements.
  • Review SIS/ESD/F&G interfaces and cause-and-effect implementation.

Vendor & Package Equipment Coordination

  • Review vendor documentation for control and automation packages.
  • Coordinate with DCS, SIS, F&G, PLC, compressor, turbine, pump, analyzer, metering, and other package vendors.
  • Review vendor drawings, data sheets, functional specifications, communication requirements, and interface documents.
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations and vendor clarification meetings.
  • Monitor vendor document submissions and close technical comments.

Testing, Commissioning & Start-Up

  • Review and witness FAT, I-FAT, SAT, and other system testing activities.
  • Verify control logic, alarms, trips, interlocks, sequences, and cause & effect functionality.
  • Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, loop checking, functional testing, and system integration.
  • Review test procedures and results and ensure punch-list items are properly closed.
  • Provide technical support during start-up and troubleshooting of automation systems.

Quality, Standards & Compliance

Ensure compliance with

  • ADNOC standards and project specifications
  • IEC standards
  • ISA standards
  • IEC 61508 / IEC 61511
  • API standards, where applicable
  • NFPA requirements, where applicable
  • Client engineering standards and approved philosophies
  • Applicable UAE statutory and regulatory requirements

Interface Management

  • Coordinate Automation & Control interfaces with Process, Instrumentation, Electrical, Mechanical, Piping, Telecom, Cybersecurity, and Operations disciplines.
  • Resolve multidisciplinary technical issues and interface discrepancies.
  • Ensure consistency between process design, instrumentation, control philosophy, cause & effect, and automation implementation.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and constructability reviews.

Technical Reporting

  • Prepare technical review comments, engineering status reports, progress reports, and technical recommendations.
  • Track engineering deliverables, comments, approvals, and outstanding actions.
  • Escalate critical technical, quality, cost, and schedule issues to PMC management.
  • Maintain effective technical documentation and engineering records.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Instrument, Electrical or Electronics Engineering
  • Minimum 1 5+ years of relevant Automation, Instrumentation & Control experience for a senior PMC position.
  • Significant Oil & Gas experience, preferably in major upstream, gas processing, LNG, refinery, or petrochemical projects.
  • Proven experience in FEED, EPC, PMC, commissioning, and/or operational environments.
  • Strong experience with DCS, SIS/ESD, F&G, PLC/SCADA, and ICSS.
  • Experience managing and technically reviewing EPC Contractor and system/vendor deliverables.
  • Previous ADNOC or major Middle East Oil & Gas project experience is highly desirable.
