Ideal for Graduate Students

  • This part-time, 3-month contract position is a great fit for graduate students seeking hands-on
  • nonprofit accounting experience. It offers flexible, part-time hours designed to work around a
  • class schedule, direct exposure to nonprofit fund accounting and financial operations, and the
  • potential to apply for a full-time role with Girls Inc. when one becomes available.
  • Departmental Role : The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the Girls Inc. Network
  • accounting operations by maintaining financial records, preparing journal entries, and reconciling
  • accounts, and assisting with financial reporting. This role works closely with the accounting team
  • to ensure accurate and timely financial information while maintaining Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies.

Position Summary

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post daily, weekly, and monthly journal entries.
  • Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintain and analyze financial records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Process fixed asset additions, disposals, and depreciation.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Process payroll.
  • Prepare information for regulatory reports (i.e., 990), when applicable.
  • Assist with external audits by providing requested documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information.
  • Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned.
  • Proficiency in the use of information technology - Windows Office environment (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with Sage Intacct or similar accounting systems is a plus.

Requirements

Job Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. 1-3 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Experience with ERP or accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, QuickBooks).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nonprofit fund accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with financial grant accounting.
  • Experience with financial reporting and audits.
  • Knowledge of internal controls and compliance requirements.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
  • Occasionally lift or move items up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work environment.
  • Standard business hours with occasional overtime during month-end, year-end close, or audit periods.
