Salary: £32,782 - £34,241 – this is based on £27,319 with progression to £28,778 per annum salary (with the additional shift allowance of 20% in addition to the relevant salary spine point Newcastle University is a great place to work, with excellent benefits . Closing Date: 11 August 2026 The Role Shifts: Our teams work from 07:00-19:00 on day shift (E) and 19:00-07:00 night shift (N) and the shift pattern is a 4-week cycle as follows. Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun WEEK 1 E E O O N N N WEEK 2 O O E E O O O WEEK 3 N N O O E E E WEEK 4 O O N N O O O We are a team of security professionals and between us we will carry out CCTV patrols covering our 50-acre campus and 100+ buildings across Newcastle city centre, supporting students, colleagues and visitors as needed and ensuring our spaces are kept safe. We have developed an interactive Map showing the areas we cover and patrol and to give you some insight into the full breadth of the University campus <https://www.ncl.ac.uk/students/campus_map/> Our Security Team play a pivotal role in ensuring that our students, visitors and colleagues have a safe and enjoyable experience on campus. You will have the opportunity for development, and we will fund your SIA licence, and as stated previously we pay a 20% shift allowance on top of your basic salary. We are looking for people who: Monitor CCTV systems proactively, acting as the first point of response by identifying incidents and escalating them calmly and professionally Liaise with security teams, emergency services, and campus stakeholders to report, log, and manage cases efficiently Provide clear, customer‑focused communication, both during incidents and in routine interactions Support a diverse student population, ensuring safety and reassurance for individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds You will undertake all operational functions, within a 24/7 customer focused security service, including but not limited to: patrolling, reception, parking control duties, security monitoring, surveillance, recording and reporting to protect the University Community as well as buildings and property; thereby providing a safe and secure environment for staff, students, contractors and visitors to the University. Key Accountabilities To operate and monitor all systems within the Security Control Centre in an efficient manner ensuring that all work is undertaken in compliance with GDPR and the University CCTV Code of Practice & Operating Instructions To liaise with the Police, other agencies and members of staff to ensure the appropriate use of the system To record all events and actions taken in a clear, legible and accurate format. To provide an efficient and courteous radio and telephone answering service and deal professionally and efficiently with all enquiries to the control centre To report any equipment failure to the Duty Team Leader /Supervisor to optimise operation of the system To support the Head of Security and supervisory team by monitoring the maintenance programme to ensure full provision of the system within the control centre To be aware of your responsibilities in terms of health and safety (DSE), including identification of appropriate health and safety training at annual Performance Development Reviews To assist in the future development of the control centre To assist with the management of recorded data, including preview, image retrieval, archiving and production to authorised agencies of digital images, alarm monitoring and response To attend Court to give evidence as per written statements, when required To assist in the provision of an emergency response service via radio and telephone networks to Schools/Support Services throughout the University in particular critical alarm activations To operate according to the Department’s core values, mission statement, codes of behaviour Any other duties which may reasonably be required which are appropriate to the post covered by this job description The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience Has significant levels of experience in a Control Room environment, overseeing an operational CCTV system Have a working knowledge of legislation pertaining to a security role including GDPR, Equality and Diversity, Human Rights Act, H&S and powers of arrest Good basic education required particularly in oral and written English A good knowledge of IT particularly data entry and retreival, and Email, using Microsoft Office Previous experience of working in a customer focused environment, often as the first point of contact with the university community and general public Attributes and Behaviour Ability to embrace change, in an evolving organisation, to the benefit of the university community Use clear and concise communication at all levels within the university Be able to operate on your own initiative or as part of a team Qualifications Hold a current Public Surveillance licence or be prepared to achieve one within after the probation period (six months) Newcastle University is a global University where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
