About The Role

POSITION SUMMARY The Psychiatric Technician apprentice participates as a member of the care team by assisting in the planning, providing, and evaluating of psychiatric patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The PT apprentice works as part of the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the customer and to support departmental objectives. PT Apprentice will care for individuals with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities, following the instructions of licensed healthcare providers. This position provides quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development. The Psychiatric Technician apprentice delivers care in a prompt and professional manner, always maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and respect. This position provides direct patient care as needed, to include patient orientation to the unit, assisting with activities of daily living, taking vital signs, reporting observations to the nurse, and participating in unit activities. The Psychiatric Technician apprentice regularly communicates observations to leadership. This position also collects test specimens as directed according to established procedures and documents patient care activities consistent with data collection and the test performed. The Psychiatric Technician apprentice may be required to perform Limited Laboratory Services to include: patient identification and preparation for specimen collection, processing samples for testing, performing required quality control testing and instrument maintenance and maintaining competency/certification of the aforementioned tasks and duties. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: High School degree or equivalent required. Ability to read, speak, and write English. Bilingual preferred. Apprentices will be enrolled in Rowan’s Psychiatric Technician program . Upon completion, apprentices will be equipped to successfully pass the Psychiatric Technician Certification (MHTC) exam offered by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). Must receive PTC within 6 weeks after successful completion of the apprenticeship program. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: American Heart Association BLS required within 30 days of hire or transfer . Certified Prevention Intervention Annual Education required within 90 days of hire or transfer . Education requirements are tracked by department leadership annually. EXPERIENCE: 1 year of mental health or related experience preferred. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS Demonstrates the competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position. Note: A & E tool distinguishes competencies for the Pleasantville & Mays Landing site. WORK ENVIRONMENT Potential for exposure to the hazards of the hospital environment, such as exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and potential injury. This position requires considerable standing, reaching and walking. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.
