About The Role

ABOUT OUR DISTRICT: The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color. JOB DESCRIPTION: The World Languages Instructional Coach will support the Department of Multilingual and Cultural Education in strengthening and expanding instructional capacity across the district to ensure high-quality teaching and learning in the World Languages program. Working collaboratively with building administrators and educators, the coach provides guidance and support to help meet the diverse linguistic, cultural, and academic needs of students. Serving as a bridge between curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning, the World Languages Instructional Coach fosters teacher growth, promotes the implementation of effective, standards-aligned instructional practices, and helps ensure that students develop language proficiency, intercultural competence, and a global perspective. REPORTS TO: Supervising Director of Multilingual and Cultural Education Department DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In collaboration with teachers, develop resource materials for personalizing the learning for all students. Collaborate with school and district leaders to strengthen world language programs and improve student outcomes. Serve as a resource in identifying appropriate research-based instructional strategies, developing standards-aligned curriculum, and supporting proficiency-based instruction and assessment to improve achievement for world language learners. Serve as a coach to teachers by providing expert advice on improving and enhancing individual lessons and units based on ongoing analysis. This will include, but is not limited to: Reviewing lesson plans, unit plans and assessments Understanding the District scope and sequence in in the World Language curriculum Observing classroom instruction and offering comprehensive analysis and feedback Conducting demonstrations and modeling lessons for classroom teachers Facilitate PLCs and/or collaborative learning teams to increase content and pedagogical knowledge of effective world language instruction. Demonstrate a commitment to high expectations for all students Support the district’s New York State Seal of Biliteracy program Complete any additional duties as assigned by the Supervising Director of Multilingual and Cultural Education Department KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING: Strong record of helping world language learners achieve academic success. Experience analyzing data and using results to modify lessons. Experience with language acquisition and instructional best practices for world language learners. Available and willing to actively participate in school communities. Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the SCSD mission and willingness to serve the SCSD community. Experience in providing high-quality professional development. Ability to plan, model, coach, and provide feedback to individual teachers and teams of teachers to improve teaching and learning. Experience building and maintaining culturally responsive learning environments that celebrate the diversity of the student population. Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible and willing to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students of the SCSD. Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills. QUALIFICATIONS: New York State World Languages certification Minimum five (5) years of World Language teaching experience required. Minimum three (3) years of experience leading other teachers to achieve strong academic results. Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible, willing, and able to play different roles at the school and district-level, and to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students of the SCSD. Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills. Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire City Residents are encouraged to apply! SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work beyond the ten-month school year and student day. SALARY/SALARY RANGE: This position will earn a stipend of $8,000, in addition to the current starting salary of $59,499 for SCSD Teachers. With proof of outside, related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
