About The Role

The Histotechnician (non-certified) works under the supervision of the Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) or Histologic Technician HT (ASCP) and Director to prepare cytology/pathology slides for examination by the pathologists, maintain the records of these examinations, and monitor the supplies and reagents as necessary.

Embed, section, make cassettes and label tissues for examination by the Pathologist. Perform computer operations necessary to enter patient information, charge for procedures, test and enter diagnosis. Prepare, and maintain the quality of cytology/pathology blocks, slide stains and reagents. Inventory, order, and stock supplies for the area and frozen section room. Picks up specimens from surgery, GI Lab and areas as needed. Keep the area clean and orderly. Take telephone calls and prepare specimens for send out. Complete competence listing as given by department lead. Maintain files of tissue blocks and slides. Other duties as assigned Education H.S. Diploma or equivalent - Required 12 hours combined of college credit hours in Biology and Chemistry within the past 8 years - Required Work Experience 1 Year - Laboratory experience - Required 2 Years - histology clinical laboratory experience - Preferred Licenses and Certifications Histotechnician (HT) - Required within 2 years of Hire OR Histotechnologist (HTL) - Required with 2 years of Hire 12-14 months of clinical training/on-boarding period - Required

Skills and Abilities Essential Technical/Motor Skills Precise hand/ eye coordination is necessary to prepare and process slides. Ability to read, write, count, and reason required. Ability to bend, stoop and lift 30-40 pounds Familiarity with human anatomy Interpersonal Skills Effective communication skills and ability to interact with patients, staff, visitors, physicians, etc. Must work well as a team member. Essential Physical Requirements Should be able to walk and stand to work in the area. Essential Mental Abilities Ability to follow rules instructions such as procedures for processing specimens. Essential Sensory Requirements Ability to see and to distinguish color. Exposure to Hazards Infectious body fluids, hazardous chemicals and fumes. Other Skills and Abilities
