The O&M Specialist will work with our students and community referrals to foster independence and confidence through specialized travel training. In this role, you will be responsible for assessing individual needs and implementing customized instructional strategies that empower our consumers to navigate their environments safely and effectively. By bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, you will play a vital role in helping our students achieve their personal and vocational goals. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Must be certified in Orientation & Mobility by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or be enrolled in an Orientation and Mobility program and earn certification within twelve (12) months of employment. Must possess a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Student Instruction & Training Evaluations: Provide individualized O&M evaluations and plan programs including low vision travel aids and pre-cane skills. Direct Instruction: Teach individualized O&M skills to all scheduled students for familiar and unfamiliar environments. Outreach: Provide O&M instruction to consumers in their home, job site, and/or community within surrounding counties. Transportation: Transport students to community locations to provide instruction in realistic learning environments. Administration & Observation Reporting: Make and record observations regarding student progress, attendance, and social behavior. Documentation: Become familiar with and utilize the Gentry database. Lesson Planning: Prepare meaningful lesson plans geared toward assessed needs and vocational goals. Inventory: Maintain inventory of low vision and mobility equipment as assigned. Team Collaboration & Development Staffing: Actively participate in and initiate student staffing as needed. In-Service: Participate in training sessions and provide in-service training upon request. Support: Provide both direct instruction and consultation to students with visual impairments. Professional Development and Certifications Specialized Training: Complete Basics of Blindness and Low Vision / Deaf 101 e-Learning course and Orientation and Mobility Certification within the first 12 months. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
