Position: American Sign Language Interpreter Location: Huntsville Regional Center ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND (AIDB) Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families. HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT Your work will have a tangible impact on those we serve. You will do this by providing high-quality American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting for students, staff, and community members across various settings (educational, administrative, and public events). You will be a cultural and linguistic bridge, ensuring clear, accurate, and nuanced communication that respects the diverse needs of our community. Additionally, you will maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct while representing AIDB with professionalism and warmth. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or equivalent Alabama Interpreter License or Permit Three (3) months of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind. Valid driver’s license, an automobile for use on the job, and liability insurance in effect. Sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to the AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI) upon hire. Must meet suitability/background requirements for employment PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree One (1) year or more of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind. One (1) year or more of community interpreting experience. RID National Interpreter Certification POSITION REQUIREMENTS Licensure & Certifications Sign Language Proficiency: Must obtain an Advanced Plus proficiency level within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment. State Licensure: Must obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Interpreting License within thirty-six (36) months of employment. Knowledge, Skills, & Experience Communication Expertise: Proven experience utilizing a full range of communication and language levels, including sign language, spoken language, and other specialized modes of communication. Core Skills: Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with a strong ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors and fellow professionals. Legal & Ethical Standards: Deep knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting; strict adherence to the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct and AIDB ethical standards. Technical Proficiency: Proficient in using Google Suite and comfortable learning internal database systems for consumer demographic entry. Operational & Travel Requirements Travel: Ability to travel daily. Extensive travel—including occasional overnight stays—is required. Flexibility: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Interpreting Services: Provide high-quality interpreting services, prioritizing your assigned location/campus while remaining flexible to assist with broader AIDB interpreting needs. Agency Collaboration: Partner with Deaf professionals to provide interpretation for agency workshops, events, and statewide programs. Community Engagement: Assist in planning and participating in key AIDB activities, such as White Cane Day, Deaf Awareness events, educational workshops, social/community events, graduation, in-service week, and summer camps. Training & Development: Deliver workshops and training sessions regarding best practices for working with interpreters within the local service area. Administrative Support: Assist the Director of Interpreting Services, complete all yearly AIDB internal training modules, accurately log consumer demographic data, and perform other duties as assigned. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB. SALARY: $23.05- $35.80 Scale PI Rank PI Renewable Permit $25.50- $40.80 Scale PI Rank LI Licensed Alabama Interpreter $30.60- $45.90 Scale PI Rank MI Master’s in Interpreting This position is eligible for the following annual incentives.
