ABOUT THE ROLE he Alabama Freedom Center for the Blind utilizes a unique training model that promotes a philosophy that with the proper skills and training, our students can accomplish – and exceed – their dreams. This is a recently established, dynamic, and growing program that employs and seeks out dedicated Structured Discovery professionals. The Alabama Freedom Center for the Blind O&M Specialist or Travel Instructor will focus on students’ long/short-term needs grounded in nonvisual instruction; cognitive problem solving; and concerted strategies for clarifying attitudes and raising expectations surrounding Blindness. The O & M Specialist will prepare lesson plans and instruct students in the development of skills and knowledge which will enable them to travel independently to the highest degree possible. This will be accomplished as you role-model problem-solving skills, critical-thinking abilities, and the confidence in your belief that Blind people can experience limitless possibilities as they gain the same belief in themselves through their training experience. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Must have successfully completed a Structured Discovery Program and demonstrated knowledge of the Structured Discovery philosophy and how Travel instruction is integrated into core curriculum components. Please attach Structured Discovery Diploma/Certificates with applicant material Must currently possess, or have previously held and be eligible to renew within 36 months, the National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC) through the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB). POSITION REQUIREMENTS Demonstrated competency in BRAILLE by scoring 90% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must be certified or certifiable in Orientation and Mobility by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB) and Mobility skills using Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) methods and principles within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must be able to work flexible hours. Required extensive vicinity and occasional overnight travel. Completion of AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, Deafblindness and Multiple Disabilities within 12 months of hire. Willingness to develop an understanding of alternate Structured Discovery methodologies for working with students with multiple disabilities. Basic understanding and use of Assistive Technology; advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) and ability to use email programs. Ability to use online teaching tools for virtual learning when in-person classes cannot be offered. Proven ability to role model the use of alternative techniques by demonstrating problem-solving skills and critical-thinking while working with students. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB. SALARY : $41,482 - $61,147 Scale MR Rank 5A (HS and Structured Discovery Program Completion) $45,483 - $68,986 Scale MR Rank 5B (BS- Class B Certification) $47,639 - $72,203 Scale MR Rank 5M (MS- Class A Certification) (260 Days) Monthly Payroll - Direct deposit is required. T his is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
