Position: Staff Interpreter AIDB -Special Projects/NRSC Decatur, Alabama ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND (AIDB) Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, Deaf Blind, multidisabled, and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and senior citizens with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year. Our services span a lifetime and include five campuses in Talladega, a statewide network of regional centers, Early Intervention services, traditional and nontraditional educational opportunities in residential, day, and outreach settings, and a manufacturing facility known as Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB), the state’s largest employer of adults who are Blind. AIDB Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with federal partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders. Special Projects consist of Gallaudet University Regional Center- South, The NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB, The APH Center for Assistive Technology Training, The Gallaudet University Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project, and the Joe Tom Armbrester Agricultural Education Program. ABOUT YOU You will play a vital role to ensure that AIDB's culture is reinforced and that employees feel connected, recognized and proud to be a part of the company. You will also contribute to the development of AIDB Special Projects Department. NRSC at AIDB serves 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Possess and maintain Alabama Interpreter License upon employment. Knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting. Valid driver license, an automobile for use on the job, and liability insurance in effect. Three (3) years or more of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Three (3) years or more of coordinating interpreting services. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Possess a minimum entry sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI); and ADVANCED PLUS must be obtained within the first thirty -six (36) months of employment. Possess and maintain RID, NAD, or BEI Advanced interpreter certification in accordance with Alabama's Interpreter License requirements. Provide and coordinate Interpreting Services. Must be willing to travel on a daily basis. Willing and able to work flexible schedules to include holidays, nights, and weekends. Assist in planning and participate in all Special Projects activities, i.e., educational workshops, social/community events, summer camps, and/or statewide programs Develop and maintain contracts with interpreters and agencies. Perform other duties as assigned by the NRSC Director. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AlDB.
