Adjunct Instructor, Communication Law

About The Role

High Point University seeks a qualified and dynamic professional to serve as an Adjunct Instructor of Communication Law. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging and rigorous instruction on the legal principles and regulatory frameworks that govern mass media, journalism, digital communication, and related fields. This role involves bringing real-world experience into the classroom to prepare students for the legal challenges and ethical responsibilities in the rapidly evolving media landscape. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver course materials, lectures, and assignments that align with the course objectives and departmental standards.
  • Facilitate interactive classroom discussions, potentially in both in-person and online/hybrid formats, to foster critical thinking and a dynamic learning environment.
  • Assess and grade student coursework, assignments, papers, and examinations in a timely manner, providing constructive feedback.
  • Maintain regular office hours (virtual or in-person) to provide academic support and mentorship to students.
  • Stay current with developments, trends, and advancements in communication law and inc orporate this knowledge into the curriculum.
  • Implement university and departmental policies and procedures, inc luding submitting grades and other r equ ired reports by established deadlines.
  • Collaborate with full-time faculty and department staff on curriculum enhancement and program development as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

R equ ired

  • Education: A Juris Doctor (JD) degree or a Master's degree in Communication Law , Media Studies, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. (A Ph.D. in Communications or a related field is often preferred for university-level positions).
  • Experience: Demonstrated professional experience in a legal field related to communications, media, or journalism (e.g., media law practice, in-house counsel, regulatory work).
  • Skills:
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with educational technology, inc luding learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas or Blackboard, and video conferencing platforms like Zoom.

Preferred

  • Prior experience teaching at the college or university level, or relevant training/mentorship experience.
  • Active admission to the bar in one or more U.S. jurisdictions .
  • Experience with online teaching formats and instructional design pr inc iples.
