  • Patient Care Technician I - Neuroscience
  • The Patient Care Technician functions within the areas of Nurses stations and patient areas as assigned. This
  • individual performs phlebotomy, patient transportation, direct para-professional nursing care to Nursing Units and
  • Emergency Department patients, as well as various registration and clerical duties. This individual is responsible
  • and accountable to an assigned group of newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Current certification in BLS within 7 days of hire.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic computer skills or ability to learn and use hospital computer.
  • Effective communication skills with unit staff and other departments.
  • Must complete orientation requirements: general hospital orientation and unit-specific orientation.
  • Reports to work as scheduled and conforms to working hours. Arrives to work at scheduled starting time.
  • Provides care for newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Performs patient assessments in an appropriate and timely fashion.
  • Adheres to HIPAA and EMTALA laws.
  • Collaborates with patients, family, and Team Members to establish interventions and goals.
  • Works and communicates well with patients, visitors, physicians, and other Team Members.
  • Sets priorities for patient care. Reassess and takes vital signs per policy and patient need.
  • Obtains and documents patient vital signs, as well as assist with placement of oxygen saturation, blood pressure monitoring and cardiac monitoring.
  • Obtains 12-lead EKGs according to best practices and hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates basic ECG interpretation.
  • Performs point-of-care glucose testing according to hospital policy.
  • Assists with resuscitation/CPR and emergency airway procedures within scope of practice.
  • Assists in care of all patient encounters, including all emergencies, within scope of practice.
  • Transports patients within the hospital in a safe and timely manner.
  • Draws blood samples and prepares them for testing according to hospital policy.
  • Documents procedures performed within scope of skills checklist.
  • Adheres to Halifax Health and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists with orienting and precepting new Team Members, students and volunteers. · Assists with unit responsibilities and duties as assigned. · Maintains certifications and education requirements of the department and Halifax Health.
  • Willingly accepts change of assignments as requested.
  • Masters manual skills/procedures (as outlined in skills checklist).
