Job Description Summary

The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to support the Lab leadership and the teams within their area to deliver against the strategy and their delivery commitments. Colleagues in these roles must come from an Engineering background, and this position represents the conscious decision of an Engineer to progress down the management track of the Y-shaped model. This allows these colleagues to start building up the broader set of skills required to operate in a engineering management position, not all of which will be developed under the Software Engineer role. However, they will remain deeply technical, providing technical guidance to teams and making sure that they make the right technology choices, though the broader set of responsibilities will often (though not always) take them away from actual coding on a very regular basis.

About the role

As a Lab Engineering Lead (Software) , you will lead and guide engineers, overseeing delivery of robust, scalable solutions and ensuring our products meet high standards of performance, reliability and security, aligned to our platform strategy.

You’ll partner closely with Product and Operations colleagues to translate business needs and pain points into clear solutions and drive measurable improvements through automation and efficiency outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead engineering delivery within a multi‑disciplinary lab, ensuring high‑quality software is delivered and operates as intended.
• Own the engineering agenda for workflow optimisation, increasing zero‑touch payments outcomes by reducing failure demand and exceptions through PEGA workflow automation and agentic AI / GenAI .
• Act as an advocate for Engineering, providing a voice for engineers, identifying blockers, and supporting teams to remove impediments and deliver effectively.
• Drive modern engineering practices and continuous improvement, leveraging technology to unlock agility and deliver compelling customer and business propositions efficiently.
• Keep the area safe by embedding resilience, security and risk management into delivery, ensuring effective handling of run/change responsibilities.

• What you’ll need
• Domain + Lab outcomes

• Experience across the payments domain, and a track record of delivering service optimisation through automation and efficiency outcomes.
• Strong experience delivering workflow automation using PEGA (or comparable workflow/BPM tooling) in complex operational environments.
• Proven, hands‑on experience applying agentic AI / GenAI to workflow optimisation to drive automation and reduce failure demand/exceptions.

• Expert experience in software design & development patterns , with the ability to set standards and direction for how teams build maintainable solutions.
• Expert software development capability, with strong engineering fundamentals and modern delivery discipline.
• Expert technical solution design experience, able to translate complex requirements into secure, resilient, operable end‑to‑end solutions.
• Engineering leadership & ways of working
• Experience providing software engineering oversight and leadership across teams, inspiring delivery while encouraging simplicity and building trust.
• Strong engineering practice across quality and secure delivery (e.g., code quality, secure programming practices, CI/CD), with the ability to coach teams and embed effective development frameworks.
• Experience working closely with Product Owner counterparts to ensure technology considerations are factored into decision making appropriately.
