About The Role

Our client, a Corporate Service Provider is looking to hire a Director of Legal.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Contribute to the formulation of strategic and policy direction for the Legal Services business unit.
  • Ensure that strategies, execution plans, operational metrics, policies, and tools are in place to achieve business unit objectives successfully.

Operations

  • Serve as a key point of contact for clients, responding promptly to and anticipating their needs, providing progress updates, and maintaining regular communication.
  • Take full responsibility for project delivery and client portfolio management.
  • Review, draft, and approve agreements and other legal documents to ensure compliance with statutory and legal requirements.
  • Ensure assignments are completed within agreed budgets and communicate any overruns to clients and partners.
  • Plan staff assignments to provide a balanced spread of experience across the team.
  • Liaise with other departments to deliver legal engagements, assessments, and opinions on various business matters.
  • Direct and assign work to team members on client engagements, review deliverables, and mentor junior staff.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Legal Department.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities, working with Executive Management to develop them.
  • Support the growth and development of the Legal Services function.
  • Participate in preparing proposals for new engagements.
  • Build and maintain senior-level client relationships and ensure client confidence in the firm’s services.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and other specialist service groups.
  • Consult with colleagues and Partners on technical and risk-related matters.
  • Ensure adherence to the firm’s quality control procedures.
  • Provide in-house counsel to Executive Management to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, within the scope of professional competence.

Business Growth

  • Continuously evaluate the service portfolio to identify gaps and potential new service offerings.
  • Promote the firm’s services and actively cross-sell complementary offerings.
  • Drive the growth and development of the Legal Services business unit, strengthening existing lines and expanding into new areas.
  • Stay informed about industry trends to identify opportunities for expansion.
  • Represent the firm at events, conferences, and networking functions, acting as a brand ambassador.

People Management

  • Partner with leadership to attract and retain top legal talent, ensuring optimal staffing and utilisation of team members.
  • Provide constructive, on-the-job feedback and coaching.
  • Foster an inclusive, innovative, and team-oriented work culture.
  • Mentor and coach staff, supporting professional growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Identify and arrange appropriate professional training opportunities.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals and goal-setting meetings in line with company policy.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Fully qualified lawyer with a warrant to practise under Maltese law.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in a similar role.
