| Main function | Under the direction from nursing personnel and physician providers, the Surgical Scrub Technician performs direct patient care activities; assisting in patient preparation for surgery/procedure; performs tasks related to the procedure; and assists in maintaining a clean, organized and prepared work environment. Will have a working knowledge of all operating/procedure room equipment, including emergency equipment used in Code situations. Will maintain a working knowledge of surgical instruments used by the surgeons in the center, along with the care, maintenance and knowledge of various sterilization techniques used in the processing of the instrumentation. |

Safety/Risk Management Program: - Adheres to all facility safety policies and procedures. - Reports observed or suspected safety hazards, policy violations, or noncompliance to the appropriate supervisor or designated safety officer. - Promotes a safe environment for patients, physicians, visitors, and staff. Duties: - Performs scrub duties for approved surgical procedures. - Assembles instruments, supplies, and equipment according to surgeons' preference cards. - Inspects equipment to ensure proper function prior to each procedure. - Follows established principles of aseptic technique and operating room procedures. - Opens sterile supplies and prepares the surgical field using sterile technique. - Arranges instruments according to the specific surgical procedure. - Confirms that all instruments and equipment are functioning properly before use. - Maintains the availability of instruments and supplies throughout procedures to prevent delays. - Identifies, reports, and responds appropriately to any break in sterile technique according to facility policy. - Properly uses, cleans, cares for, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed. - Handles surgical instruments and equipment safely to maintain patient safety and equipment integrity. - Assists in maintaining adequate operating room supplies for immediate access during procedures. - Assists with stocking and storing supplies and equipment. - Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons' preference cards. - Responds promptly to the needs of the patient, surgeon, and surgical team throughout procedures. - Accurately communicates pertinent patient information to appropriate members of the healthcare team. Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent *required*. - Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program *preferred*. - Current Surgical Technologist certification *preferred.* - Previous operating room experience *preferred*. - Knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and operating room procedures. - Strong communication, decision-making, organizational, and teamwork skills. Work Environment and Physical Requirements: - Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures. - Frequent walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and moving equipment and supplies. - Fine motor skills and manual dexterity are essential. - Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment. - Category I position involving occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials. |
