IT Network & Communications Technician

About The Role
The IT Network & Communications Technician is responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and troubleshooting the university’s network and communications infrastructure. The role ensures high-performance, reliable, and secure network services across campus, supporting operations such as internet connectivity, VoIP systems, video conferencing, and audiovisual infrastructure in academic and administrative facilities.
- Network Infrastructure Management
- Install, configure, and maintain routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Conduct routine maintenance, firmware upgrades, and performance tuning.
- Monitor and optimize network performance, availability, and usage using appropriate monitoring tools.
- Assist with planning and implementing network upgrades and expansions.
- Communication Systems Support
- Support and troubleshoot VoIP telephony, video conferencing systems, intercoms, and unified communication tools.
- Ensure AV infrastructure in lecture halls, labs, and meeting rooms meets academic and streaming requirements.
- Provide training and guidance to staff and end-users on communication tools.
- Security & Compliance
- Collaborate with the IT Security team to implement firewall policies, VPNs, and access control lists (ACLs).
- Ensure compliance with network safety and technical standards, particularly in structured cabling and fiber optics.
- Operations & Documentation
- Maintain structured cabling across campus buildings.
- Document network configurations, diagrams, and technical procedures.
- Maintain an inventory of communication and network equipment and suggest procurement plans.
- Support & Collaboration
- Respond to help desk tickets related to networking and communications.
- Provide both remote and on-site support.
- Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for maintenance and service delivery.
- Stay updated with networking trends and recommend solutions to enhance campus connectivity.
Education
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent is highly desirable.
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience in network administration, support, and communication systems within enterprise or academic environments.
- Proven experience with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless networks.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN networks, TCP/IP protocols, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and network monitoring tools.
- Proficiency in supporting communication systems such as VoIP, video conferencing, and unified communication platforms.
- Familiarity with structured cabling, fiber optics, and network layout design.
- Experience with tools like Cisco Meraki, Fortinet, Aruba, or similar technologies.
Other Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (Arabic is a plus).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
