About The Role
The Preschool Teacher, under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, is responsible for planning and implementing a safe, nurturing, and engaging preschool program for children ages 3–5. The teacher will foster each child's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development while preparing them for a successful transition to kindergarten.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certification in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
- Previous experience working with preschool-aged children.
- Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with children, parents, and coworkers.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe) preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans and daily activities.
- Prepare and organize classroom materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Create a safe, welcoming, and positive classroom environment.
- Supervise children at all times during program hours and maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios.
- Promote children's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development through play-based learning and structured activities.
- Encourage positive behavior using appropriate classroom management techniques.
- Communicate professionally with parents regarding children's progress, behavior, and daily activities.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and other required documentation.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and learning materials.
- Follow all Midlothian Park District policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Attend required staff meetings, orientations, training sessions, and parent orientation events.
- Perform assigned duties safely while following all safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor.

- Work cooperatively as part of a team while also demonstrating initiative.
- Effectively communicate with supervisors, coworkers, parents, and children.

- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in classroom activities throughout the day.
- Ability to sit on the floor, kneel, bend, squat, reach, and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to walk frequently throughout the facility and outdoor play areas.
- Ability to lift, carry, or assist children and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to read, write, and use basic technology for communication and record keeping.
Environmental Considerations
- Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- May be exposed to common childhood illnesses.
- May be exposed to insects, including bees and mosquitoes.
- May be exposed to cleaning products and art materials used in preschool programming.
Cognitive and Safety Requirements
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Exercise sound judgment and maintain awareness of children's safety at all times.
- Ability to multitask while supervising children in a dynamic environment.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to emergencies.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and Park District information.
- Follow all state licensing requirements and Midlothian Park District policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
