The Morgan County Jail is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation. All applicants must be able to work any shift and any day of the week, including weekend and holidays. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, must have a high school diploma or equivalent, must be able to pass an initial drug screen as well as random drug screens and must be able to pass training tests including a firearms shooting proficiency test.

Position Overview

Jail Officers at the Morgan County Jail are tasked with the critical responsibility of maintaining security and order within the facility. Their role is pivotal in enforcing local, state, and federal laws, ensuring the safety and protection of people and property. These officers are in charge of both the interior and exterior security of the jail, which includes monitoring surveillance cameras, managing electronic and digital door controls, observing detainee activities, and conducting watch tours and patrols.

An essential part of their duties is maintaining accurate accounting of all detainees. This involves conducting periodic cell checks, shakedowns, roll calls, and head counts in their assigned areas. The booking process for new detainees is also a key responsibility, encompassing photographing, fingerprinting, data entry, form completion, receipting personal property, and contraband searches.

Overseeing detainee activities is another critical aspect of their job. This includes managing telephone calls, commissary purchases, counsel, and family visitations. They are also responsible for distributing meals and ensuring the removal of trays from cellblocks, as well as maintaining the personal hygiene of detainees and the cleanliness of cell areas. This includes managing hygiene items, cleaning supplies, laundry, and equipment issued to detainees.

Providing detainees with prescribed medications as per physician orders and ensuring they receive proper medical attention are also key responsibilities. Officers must ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations, addressing inappropriate behavior, and taking necessary corrective actions. In situations involving violent or uncontrollable detainees, they are trained to securely and safely restrain such individuals. These officers also transport and escort detainees to various locations for court appearances, medical appointments, recreational activities, and other necessary meetings.

Responding to inquiries from family members, attorneys, and the general public regarding visitation and detainee status is part of their communication duties. They handle detainee grievances following the established chain of command and maintain and update institutional logs, incident reports, daily activity reports, booking/release records, and medical records, submitting these reports according to department deadlines.

Jail Officers are also responsible for managing incoming and outgoing detainee mail and personal items, including inspections and logging. They answer telephone calls and receive jail visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and directing calls or visitors as appropriate.

In addition, they may be called upon to testify in legal proceedings and court as necessary. Their role requires continuous learning and adaptation, which is facilitated through mandatory in-service training. Apart from these primary duties, they perform other related tasks as assigned or required, contributing significantly to the efficient and effective operation of the Morgan County Jail.
