As a Staff Data Engineer within Financial Services & Control Technology, you will provide technical leadership across the design, delivery, modernisation and ongoing evolution of our strategic data platforms.
You will be hands-on, responsible for shaping data architecture, engineering standards and platform capabilities that support Product Control and broader Finance Technology outcomes. Working across engineers, architects, delivery teams and business stakeholders, you will drive the development of secure, scalable and resilient cloud-native data solutions aligned with the Bank's strategic objectives.
A key initial focus of this role will be leading the modernisation of legacy Microsoft SQL Server-based data platforms into AWS-native services. Following migration, the role will continue to own and evolve the platform through ongoing feature delivery, operational excellence, automation and AI-enabled engineering practices.

As a Staff Data Engineer, you will be a hands-on senior technical leader within the Engineering Chapter, driving platform strategy, engineering excellence and technical decision-making while mentoring engineers and contributing to the broader data engineering community.
In this role, you will
- Lead the design, delivery and ongoing evolution of a scalable, secure and cost-effective cloud-native data platform supporting Product Control
- Drive the modernisation of legacy data, reporting and analytics capabilities, transitioning from Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS to AWS-native services including Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, QuickSight and Snowflake.
- Design, build and optimise enterprise-scale data products, databases and data pipelines that deliver trusted, high-quality data assets for reporting, analytics and regulatory requirements.
- Lead technical decisions and actually do data modelling, database design, performance optimisation and cloud data architecture, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient and aligned with enterprise standards.
- Establish and enhance automated data quality, reconciliation, monitoring and operational controls to support platform reliability and governance outcomes.
- Drive adoption of modern engineering practices including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, platform automation and AI-assisted engineering capabilities to improve delivery velocity and quality.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentoring and engineering oversight, reviewing designs and implementations while uplifting capability across the Data Engineering practice.
- Partner with architects, engineers, data consumers, business stakeholders and delivery teams to successfully modernise, operate and continuously enhance the Product Control data platform.
- Support strategic platform initiatives through all stages of delivery, including design, engineering, testing, reconciliation, migration, cutover, production support and ongoing feature development.

Bring deep data engineering expertise and enjoy combining hands-on delivery with technical leadership. We don't expect you to have experience across every technology listed below, however exposure to a broad range of these capabilities will help you succeed in this role.
- Extensive experience designing, building and evolving enterprise data platforms, data products, ingestion frameworks and ETL/ELT solutions in complex environments.
- Strong expertise in SQL, PostgreSQL, data modelling and database performance optimisation, with the ability to make architecture and design decisions across large-scale platforms.
- Hands-on experience with AWS data services including Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, Athena, Lambda and EMR.
- Experience modernising legacy data platforms and data warehouses, including migration of databases, ETL processes, reporting solutions and analytical workloads to cloud-native architectures.
- Strong data engineering experience spanning ingestion, transformation, data warehousing, reporting, reconciliation and operational support capabilities.
- Proficiency in Python and/or PySpark for building scalable, automated and maintainable data pipelines.
- Experience developing and optimising cloud-native ETL and ELT solutions, leveraging modern data engineering patterns and automation practices.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices and Agile delivery methodologies.
- Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, metadata management, data quality, reconciliation, security and operational controls.
- Experience implementing engineering standards across data modelling, platform security, observability, testing, deployment automation and operational support.
- Experience with AWS migration and modernisation services such as AWS DMS and AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) would be advantageous.
- Experience with reporting, analytics and data visualisation platforms such as Amazon QuickSight, Snowflake, Power BI or Tableau would be beneficial.
- Experience within banking, financial services or other highly regulated environments would be highly regarded.
- AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate, or equivalent cloud data engineering certifications, would be advantageous.
Success Measures
- Successfully modernise legacy data platforms, databases, data pipelines and reporting capabilities, delivering strategic AWS-native solutions leveraging Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, QuickSight and Snowflake.
- Deliver scalable, secure, resilient and cost-effective cloud-native data platforms and data products that meet current and future Product Control, Finance and Regulatory requirements.
- Improve platform performance, reliability and maintainability through engineering excellence, automation, observability, data quality controls and operational best practices.
- Establish and drive adoption of modern engineering patterns, standards and reusable frameworks across data ingestion, transformation, storage, analytics and reporting capabilities.
- Improve engineering productivity and delivery outcomes through CI/CD, automation, AI-assisted engineering practices and platform standardisation.
- Enable faster access to trusted and governed data through improved data lineage, metadata management, reconciliation, data quality and governance capabilities.
- Drive the adoption and effective utilisation of modern analytics and data platform technologies including Amazon Redshift, QuickSight and Snowflake to support reporting, analytical and business decision-making outcomes.
- Provide technical leadership that uplifts engineering capability, drives architectural consistency and establishes sustainable engineering practices across the broader Data Engineering community.
- Successfully balance platform modernisation, operational stability and ongoing feature delivery, ensuring the platform continues to evolve and deliver business value well beyond the initial migration programme
